Hey everyone! Hopefully someone can answer my question because I am completly stumped by this. I had been taking Metamucil for about 3 weeks (one heaping tablespoon once a day). I had great results for a week, but then almost exactly one week after I had started taking it, it stopped working! So I tried taking one heaping TB twice a day (once in the AM, once before bed). That didn't do me any good either.
So today I decided to try Citrucel. I took one of the scoops this AM and I'm debating on taking another tonight. So my question is this: Is it possible to become "immune" to certain fiber laxatives after taking them so long? I didn't think it was possible, but I'm searching for any answers! Also, I've read on this site that some fiber supplements work better for people over others. Is this true? I do bloat and get gas easily so I've been thinking that the Metamucil should be a big no-no for me.
Any comments are greatly appriciated! Thanks so much and have a great weekend!

Hmm... I don't know about the immunity part... I don't think so. Soluble fiber supplements aren't really "laxatives", even though they're marketed that way, so it would be kind of like suddenly becoming immune to vitamins, at least in my mind - really unlikely.

However, remember that for Heather's diet, it's recommended that you get 12-15g of fiber from a supplement every day, in addition to the IBS diet. I can't speak for the Metamucil, but speaking from experience with the Citrucel, 1 or 2 scoops a day isn't nearly that much fiber. Keep increasing your dosage gradually till you get up to the recommended daily amount - there's more information on SFS's in the "IBS Supplements" section of the website.

And yes, your body can prefer one kind of fiber over another. But there are people here who use both Citrucel and Metamucil successfully, and my personal favorite is FiberChoice (which is supposedly one of the most "difficult" ones in terms of gas and bloating, but I've had no such problems), so you just never know! Give the Citrucel a try for a little while, and see how it goes. Good luck!

Some of us are okay at 8g a day, but Heather does recommend 12-15g, or even more if you're seriously C!

So it's okay for me to take 4 servings of Citrucel a day?! Wowzers! I should buy some stock in Citrucel at the rate I'm going to be going through it! lol
