The only type of millet I know is the stuff I give my budgie?! Which is seeds? There's millet flakes that you can make into a kind of mashed potato affair and I'd quite like to try it, but obviously only if its safe for us IBSers?! Anyone know?

Hey Nik, had any luck with those muffin recipes? I'm going to make roast capsicum and corn muffins for brekkie tomorrow, and am in the process of making a rum and raisin cake using processed chickpeas and rice flour as the base!! I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be eating such strange sounding food!! But hey, thats the life of a GFer, willing to try anything, huh?

Well millet. I haven't eaten if for a while, but used to have it quite a bit last year. Had no problem with it, but usually ate it with SF veges like pumpkin and sweet potato.

And how this for coincidence. Just after I got your email describing what quinoa is, I went to the HFS to stock up on a few things, and there was quinoa on the shelf! And can you believe how much it was, $8.50 for a 500 gram packet!!!??? I think I'll stick to millet, rice and buckwheat thank you very much!!!

I have started to eat millet now too, but not sure how safe it is. I get the grain kind, as I have never seen it in flake form. I would prefer the flake kind because it seems like it would be safer.

That being said, it is a great source of fiber, but mostly all the fiber is IF. So, Chrissy is problably right about having it with more SF based veggies like squash, carrots, and pumpkin. I do eat it with green beans and spinach too, but I am just starting to try this, so I am just at the experimenting stage.

Honestly, I am so bad at trying to figure out triggers, that I could be eating it and it could be causing problems and I wouldn't even know it because I am always hurting and having symptoms.

I wish I could find millet in flake form. I just make sure I cook the millet longer than it says to, and add extra water so that it comes out more mushy than it is suppose to.

Let us know if you try it and how it goes!

What kind of quinoa are you guys eating? The flakes or the round balls?

Also, what form of buckwheat do you eat? I'm not sure if I should try this, as many have had problems with buckwheat!

Hi Beth! I've never had quinoa before. I didn't know what it was until Nik explained to me on Fri. Then cooincidentally I saw it in the HFS, but bugger me if I'm paying $8.50 for a taste of it!!

As for buckwheat, I eat it either in flour, pasta or ground form. Eg I put a cup of buckwheat flour in my bread mix, or have buckwheat pancakes (yummm!!), Orgran makes buckwheat pasta, or I put a 1/4 cup or so of buckwheat grains in my food processor to break it down a bit, then add to it just about anything.

Buckwheat is apparently quite high in protein so its a good source of high protein fibre (like beans, but baked beans good for your heart, baked beans make you fart!).

I hope buckwheat is safe tho....... I wouldn't know what was and what wasn't lately. Life has become really hard. I jus wish my constant HUGE bloat would go away so I could read my symptoms better.

Good luck sweety, hope you're well today

Hi Neeta!! Thank you! I'm doing alright I spose. For some reason I've had REALLY bad C for the past couple of weeks. They say IBS comes in cycles. I had perfect BMs for months and months and months, so I suppose its my turn to be visited by the IBS demon. I've been taking benefiber, so I wonder if its a case of too much SF not enough IF.

Sigh, this was all really easy last year when I first started GF and DF, BMs turned up miraculously and without effort....... these days I seem to be trying everything and nothing is happening!

Perhaps I'm trying too hard and thinking too much.

Thats expensive, was that the hard form of quinoa or the flake form? Coz the flake form is a bit cheaper!?! Haven't tried any recipes yet, been quite busy, but I did have time to put the Orgran GF bread mix in the bread machine and it came out great, tastes odd, but nice nonetheless!

I am going to get some millet and try it......fingers crossed for no GAS!!!

I'm impressed you got the orgran bread mix to work in a bread machine!! I've only had success mixing it by hand and putting it in the oven. Did you do anything special with it??

The quinoa was grain form I think......

I eat it for breakfast with almond milk. Until eating wheat recently and spelt bread it was just fine for me. (Now my tummy has gone ammuck!)

Quinoa is usualy fine for me as well.

And I can eat brown rice like there's no tomorrow. In fact, without eating brown rice daily, I get C!

Hope everyone feels good *big hugs*

I know - I though "oh, bugger it I can't be bothered to mix it" - so bunged it in and hoped for the best! What a result! Try and find the flakes, its an acquired taste but nicer with a banana if you can tolerate them!

They look like little round pellets that you boil in water like rice??? Or do you guys only eat the puffed cereal and flake form??

I don't know if the pellet form is safe! And I am unable to find the puffed or flake form anyhow.

Chrissy, Ruchie, Nik, can you guys help me!!

Thanks

I've never heard of quinoa in flakes. I eat it in grain form, and I have no problems with it. Also, Heather lists quinoa as soluble fiber, so it should be fine.

I've never had millet, so I'm sorry I can't help you with that.

the cooked grain millet as well as the puffed. Maybe someone else will be able to help me.

I know it is IF though. But good 3 grams of fiber, so I would like to eat this. I cannot find puffed millet anywhere!

They told me it was discontinued. I guess it isn't though. Maybe I will call them and ask them to carry it. It couldn't hurt. I doubt they will do this for one person though. Thanks Ruchie!
