We should totaly hare recipes!

I am learning to LOVE to cook! Hubby won't touch what I eat...and it is antisocial in many ways. BUT it's worth it if we feel better!

Maybe instead of going to other's houses we should have people to our place?!

I will say...I eat more IF tha I used to. And it is ok for my bod (I wonder if my prob is wheat/Gluten or IBS....). When I have no sugar, red meat, dairy, or wheat/gluten in my life...things are better for me! I can digest IF with much ease.

Ever tried olive oil on a potato with some fresh herbs (basil, pessed garlic...whatever strikes your fancy?) Or brown rice pasta with pureed soup? After a while you come to enjoy things you never would have tried...

Expensive it IS. And because we were not diagnosed medically we cannot prove we need GF food and thus iinsurance won't pay for the food.

On the up side...we learn to be creative cooks! We learn to tkae care of and respect our bodies in new ways!

I tell myself ALL THE TIME that I am healthy because I don't eat many processed foods.

I wish I had somethig better to say....

Let me know if you want recipes....

sending hugs and love your way, Ruchie

Hey Beth,

As if its not enough that we have to eat IBS safe, GF is the nail in the coffin I can handle it at home, cooking GF is fine (but yes it can be bloody expensive!!) but it can be so embarrassing when you have to constantly question restaurants, have to sit and watch b/f devour some pizza and garlic bread, or get this one: try and politely tell your friend thanx but no thanx because while she painstakingly made a GF cake she forgot that icing sugar contains gluten. Sigh, I hate feeling like such an alien amongst of world of such normal people

a Jewish holiday (like the Sabbath) that occurs every week. And almost every time we wnet to friend's they would put something in the food I couldn't eat. I ate it anyway and uffered...never truly allowing my bod have a break form these offender foods. And then I just decided to stay home...

This coming Shabbos I plan to bring my own food to our friend' house for Shabbos. Fun? Not so much. SAFE ypu betchya!

So what do you bring to a friend' house? Depending on the occasion...I plan to bring roasted veggies and some soup or something...I'll let you know when I have it figured out.

We can do this...i'm so glad I'm not alone *hugs*

Sorry, I'm just having one of those whingy days! I LOVE to cook as well, b/f tells me that going GF couldn't have happened to a better person because I love to whip up a storm in the kitchen. Its just sometimes the cost gets to me, so I've considered giving up on gluten substitutes, but then I'll really miss my muffins, cakes and bread.

We often have friends over, or we go to their place and everyone brings a dish. So I'll usually cook one of the dinner dishes and a dessert as well (which means we then end up with food overkill!) but at least I can join in and not feel uncomfortable.

I too went red meat, shellfish, sugar, dairy, gluten, caffeine, cocoa, alcohol and soy free, as well as low fructose, and within 6 weeks I felt marvellous. So if I can find the willpower to do that diet again, stabilise, and then gradually add small amounts of foods back in, I should be able to control my IBS and still eat some of the foods I love. SHOULD being the operative word!!

And its so true about enjoying foods you never would normally have. I love veges and rice pasta with just GF chicken stock, or veges and lentils, buckwheat pancakes, chicken and vege soup, yumm yummm, healthy food really is so yummy, its just sometimes you want to indulge in something decedent, as nothing beats a slice of chocolate pie, yuummmmmm! If I could do it on the odd occassion my life would be complete. I don't want unhealthy food all the time, just every now and again

So anyway, I'm a very creative cook (made some GF hot cross buns on the weekend, yummmm they were good!) so a recipe share sounds great. I can substitute any recipe that contains gluten, but its the cost of doing it thats becoming draining. So I'm up for GF foods that don't require expensive substitutes.

Like GF cakes that contain almond meal instead of GF flour, yumm.

I'll have a think about some recipes and get back to you

Thanx for the *hugs* somedays we really need them to stay sane!

Despite having a bit of a falling out with my naturopath I'm still embarking on a healthy wheat free diet. I've tried making GF muffins and stuff (yep, sugar free too) and YUCK! They're just so not the same! Even just the normal bread (GF) I'm struggling with liking. It tastes kinda sweet and while I have a sweet tooth I don't like it in my bread (which no offence to all you GF eaters) always tastes crumbly and stale to boot! I bought some allergy free recipie books the other day but to be perfectly honest I'm not finding food at all inspiring atm and despite all my efforts I think I'm in MORE pain now than I was before! Now I just get this dull pain all through my upper and lower belly that gets worse if I sit down for more than a couple of minutes! Hmm, what's a seeminly helpless IBS'er to do. I hope this diet works for you though. Good luck and keep me updated!

Well when we have dinner parties I usually take a casserole (apricot chicken, yummmmm, my favourite) or some fish/ chicken for a bbq and a salad. I LOVE roast veggie salads, my recipe is sweet potato, pumpkin, zucchinni, capsicum, red onion (I can tolerate roast onion fine) and eggplant roasted in the oven with a little olive oil, and then tossed in balsamic vinegar. DELICIOUS!

For dessert, last time I made a GF banana maple pudding, yummm, or I've made a GF chocolate pudding using dark chocolate so its DF. But you're sugar free aren't you? I'm just starting a sugar free/ fructose free diet to see if it helps, so desserts will be a thing of the past. Sigh.... nevermind, I'm more of a savourie person anyhow.

So do you have soy? I've got recipes for soy cream cheese and soy sour cream to add to dips and casseroles. I bought a recipe book from the Australian coeliac society recently and it also is for people with IBS, fructose malabsorption and lactose intolerance. It has some great recipes, I think restricted eaters just need inspiration

Hey Amy, I'm so sorry your new diet isn't helping. I'll have to admit, when I first started cooking GF I thought the bread was foul because it was so crumbly and stale so I stopped eating anything that would traditionally contain gluten. I've now found a company that makes really nice GF rolls (they're called The Gluten Free Baker) and they're not the least bit crumbly and taste really fresh. Very filling though, I find rice flour is very dense so you can't eat as much of it.

On the other hand I've made some really yummy GF muffins, problem is you need to add quite a bit of nuttlex (DF butter) or oil to stop them from being crumbly. They taste delicious!!! But after all the expense of cooking GF you also end up eating foods with more fat then someone with IBS can handle (I do fine, but others may not).

Sigh, so what is a helpless IBSer to do?? I found when I first did the vega diet I lived off fresh foods quite happily: brown rice, cooked veges, chicken, fish, bananas, mangos and snacked on rice crackers. I was happy enough with that diet at the time because I was feeling SOOOOOOO good. But you get sick of behaving so well after a while.

I hope you start to feel better soon!! Geez that must suck, behaving so well food wise, and still feeling crappy You poor thing.

Yep, fat's a big problem for me. And after doing some internet research on the vega test I have to be honest I just don't trust it. I think I might talk to my GP about going on the RPA elimination diet to see what really does cause me bother cause obviously even though I'm avoiding sugar, wheat, yeast, dairy, fats and fruit I'm still eating something that's bugging me! It's awful, I feel like I'm not eating much (although Ruchie's lemon and dill fish with brown rice and vege's was delicious last night-thanks Ruchie!) I'm still suffering as though I'm eating all this stuff wrong. And now I've found my naturopath who I handed over $220 to (which I didn't have really and am still struggling to get back on track) really has no interest at all any more now that she has my money Should of known I'd find someone like that! If you come up with any yummy recipies I'd love to hear them! I haven't been posting much the last few days (am in a bit of a bad place atm) but I'm around and reading still!

Hey Amy, I'm pretty skeptical when it comes to these things as well. And while the vega diet did do wonders for me (BTW, my first consult was $450!!! geez I was duped by all the pills and potions he prescribed!!), my naturopath has never been able to fully explain how the test works and why certain foods were eliminated. Which is pretty dodgy, and why I'm currently doing a detection diet (like an elimination diet) instead. The people who are supporting me with the detection diet (its web based) believe that one can solve almost all digestive problems through diet alone, and there is no need for supplements, pills and potions, as these are only a quick fix, they can irritate the bowel even more, and aren't addressing the root causes for digestive disorders.

Sooooo I'm eliminating gluten and dairy as my first test, and I'm also watching my sugar and yeast intake (I'm going to test them properly in a couple of weeks time).

I'm already so much more knowledgeable about food intolerances and the symptoms they cause in my body. I felt I needed to take control of my diet, instead of relying on my allergist to test me each month and say 'yay' or 'nay' to certain foods. The only test you can truly trust is the one you do yourself, on yourself, as your symptoms are the key.

Good luck! Let me know how you go! And I'll dig up some yummy recipes to keep us food challenged people inspired
