Hubby spent time in Italy and he said you can't even buy processed tomato sauce there...everything is cooked fresh. What is it like where you live?

Kids are definitely bigger than when I was a kid. We used to be outside all of the time, but kids these days watch too much tv, eat the wrong foods and play Playstation all day! Its a BIG shame! The foods that are advertised over here are mainly junk foods, sweets, "quick" foods, which have MSG and other artificial rubbish in. The most expensive foods are organic and fresh foods, which to me is completely wrong! I watched "Super Size Me" where the guy eats nothing but McD's for 30 days, and on there it showed statistics of how big people are getting, how much junk they eat a day/week and what it is doing to them. The guy in the end had severe liver problems and the docs told him to stop the diet, but he continued right to the end! I recommend anyone watching it if you haven't already!!

So, processed food is the winner over healthy varieties - at the moment, Jamie Oliver is going around to schools to sort out their school dinners, its amazing what the kids actually eat and reminds me of when I was at school - a chocolate bar, following by a packet of crisps then a cake! No wonder we are all ending up with digestive disorders! And obviously anything Linz or any of the other UK'ers can add.....

Schemes like organic boxes of veg and farmers markets are getting more popular, but buying organic in the supermarkets is still usually alot more expensive. Slowly, slowly.

And alternative foods and vegetarian options have improved immensely in the country over the last 10 years (since I turned veggie and started drinking soy milk)...now you can get alot of the foods in supermarkets, which is brilliant - I love Tescos! I remember the days when my Mum and I used to drive for up to half an hour to go to a HFS and then find they didn't have what we wanted!

There are also lots of options for different cuisines - ready made and as quick as possible usually, but not always bad. Quick food is a big deal over here...there isn't the culture of enjoying food like there often is on the Continent.

Schools are pretty bad. I think I had it pretty good, but chips were still on the menu far too often at my secondary (high) school. By the time I was in the sixth form most of the girls were eating healthy choices through weight-watching tho! And they were there, but that was a good school. Jamie Oliver's scheme is fantastic - people need to realise that cooking in schools is a very important job and stop paying badly trained people peanuts to do it!

All this healthy eating is a real learning curve for me, so finding things I can eat I still get really excited about!! HFS's are the best thing ever!!

I've always been busy when they come to Newbury. If I ever get the money and time to sort my garden out, my design includes growing some veggies and it'll be organic, so that'll be great!

They have one early on a Saturday morning, have been meaning to get down there, but I always forget! They had one in my home town Midsomer Norton t'other day, but I'm sure it was just one table full of odd shaped potatoes!! Ah, small towns are great aren't they!!!

I see now that you live in Bath. Our favorite English city. We will be there on the 15th of April. You are so lucky!

We were there in Oct 2003. We came to Bath since I am a Janite (Jane Austen fan) and my husband likes Roman stuff. We both loved it and we are coming back to England next month and wanted to come again. Would it be possible to give me some suggestions of places to eat? Last time we came all I cared about was satisfying my tastes but this time I am on the diet and have to be careful. We loved the Raj Poot! and want to eat there again. We stay here which is friendly and clean and we can walk around town. Please give restaurant advice (pleading).
