Hello, my IBS-D isn't debilitating, but I have increasingly worse gas and bloating, which I find most frustrating. The peppermint tea isn't helping the bloating -- any other suggestions? I am a health nut too, and the switch from bran and whole wheat and lots of salad is a little overwhelming.
Reading these posts have given me lots of insight. Thank you.

Welcome to the boards!

For gas and bloating, you might have better luck with fennel tea, rather than peppermint. If you find the fennel taste is overwhelming - some do - I've heard that combining the fennel and peppermint makes it more manageable.

Good luck!

Hi, Millie, glad you have found this website, you will find lots of help and good advice here.

Peppermint helps to soothe the whole gastro-colic system, so keep drinking it, it will help to calm things down in the long run. Fennel is quite specific for bloating and gas, but, be warned, it will help to release trapped gas, so you might actually be more aware of things for a while - but it is much better to get it out!

If you have been eating bran, whole wheat and lots of salad, your insides are probably feeling very sore and tender right now. It may take a little time, but if you follow the diet guidelines and start taking an SFS the bloating will improve.

Best of luck!

Josephine

Welcome to the boards. This is a great place and I'm sure you will find lots of help.

I get gas and bloating a lot, too. I take OTC Phazyme and it really does help me.

Good luck

Thank you for your suggestions.
Any ideas where can I get fennel seeds? Can I buy fennel tea bags?

You can get the best fennel seeds from Heather here or get teabags from a HFS...these won't be as strong so you'll need to brew it for longer.

I get my fennel tea bags at whole foods, but as Linz said, they aren't as strong. They are more convenient to bring to work with me, so sometimes I just use two bags to help strengthen the tea.

Yes it is the same as Heather sells except that spices from the spice rack don't seem to ever be fresh. Heather's fennel is fresh and full of essential oils. It is a bargain too!

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
