How do you prevent an IBS-C attack from happening?

I'm hoping someone can give me some help with this. When I suffer an attack, I usually notice it starting with mild lower left back pain and lower left abdominal/groin pain. Sometimes it doesn't take much before it escalates into a full blown attack which often takes me to the floor - literally. I've also had problems intermittently with diarrhea but my attacks are primarily with constipation. The pain is so severe that I can hardly walk. I hope someone can relate to this kind of pain and offer some advice. I can't keep going to ER and I don't like pain medication. I know it relieves the pain but it's very constipating for me and that only aggrivates things worse. Thank you in advance. HS

When I was younger I used to suffer with really bad-doubled-over-in-pain type cramps, but I usually cured it by eating something soluble or as Linz says, peppermint tea. It was so severe that it would disable me for a while, until I could squeeze the gas/BM out! Since I developed full blown IBS and being on this diet, I haven't had one of those types of cramps - have you tried this diet as yet?

I don't know anything about you but a woman with this type of pain would be wise to get a thorough gyno exam to rule out anything there. Constipation/IBS can be aggravated by problems there and vice versa. HTH.

I've had 2 GYN exams that have ruled out anything Gynecological in nature. Thank you anyway.

Yes, I've been drinking Peppermint tea. I try to drink it if I feel the least bit of a spasm. Sometimes it seems like my intestines have a mind of their own. I also decided to try Chamomile tea after reading in Heathers book about the effects of it. So I use Peppermint if I feel any pain and Chamomile throughout the day.

Last summer I had lab work, a Barium Enema, and a CT Scan done to check and rule out other problems. Everything came back negative. That particular GI (new Dr. to me) told me to see Professional help. I thought that was a slap in the face because it felt like he thought I was suffering some kind of depression or other problems causing the IBS, which I know and understand is a possibility. I'm 45 and started going through Perimenopausal changes last year and everything with my body is going haywire. I now have a better understanding of the PMS jokes. Unexplained weight gain, irregular periods, insomnia and difficulty digesting foods only while during my period otherwise I'm back to normal and stomach begins digesting normally again. The IBS also kicked in when all of this other stuff started happening. I know IBS can be either diet, stress, or hormonal rlated from what I've been reading. I've seen my PCP, GYN, and a GI. I'm scheduled with a new GI in April. He just may make some changes to my current meds. Since I quit working 2 years ago, it has eliminated most of the stress but I find that sometimes I still wake up in the middle of the night with a full blown panic attack. My Dr. says it's because the body is in a relaxed state and is feeling the effects of the stress that I endured during the day. Actually, he told me that while I was still working. I wonder why I still get them though. I'm a housewife and stay busy keeping house, cooking, and trying to get appropriate rest.

Thanks for the feedback. Heidi

Have you ever had a colonoscopy? I'd push for one when you see the new Gi if not.

Anti-aniety meds or anti-depressants can be very helpful. I've been on anti-depressants for IBS, depression and Fibro! Often it seems that if you take something to minimise the depression or anxiety then your IBS improves anyway...plus they can help the IBS in themselves.

Have you tried hypno for anxiety?

Sounds like you know what you're doing! I suffer with anxiety, used to get panic attacks esp at night, wake up in a cold sweat type, walking around insomnia too!! Horrid stuff. PMS was also a big deal, until I lost a load of weight and stopped having periods!! Which has been like heaven, as I used to suffer bad! Roll on periods eh! I also just came out of a bad relationship, so highly stressed was unbelievable, plus my job was really under-stressful, if that makes sense, as I didn't have enough to do for my brain!!! Then I realised that I really need to start taking care of me, I used to worry about what people thought of me and whether I'd upset people - but I'm not pandering to people any more and how relaxed I feel now!!! I got into a routine of going to bed early, getting up at the same time, eating the right things and basically learning to be with me again - and I really cannot stop "bigging" this site up to everyone! I have a dietician appt next week and I'm going to take all my books and website print outs with me just so they know what and how and why I do things!! I'm quite looking forward to it!!! Best of luck with it all x Nik x

Is peppermint tea better than fennel tea - that is what I have been drinking and also sipping during my meals????
