Heather, I'm a little confused. I keep reading in a highly credited newsletter that coconut and coconut oil is good for IBS. It said that this would help with inflamation. Of course, I'm too afraid to try it because I am well aware of the painful problems it could cause, so I need your expert opinion. Is coconut oil helpful or hurtful?

I was surprised to see coconut mentioned. It was recommended to me and I find every day I eat 1 coconut macaroon and it seems to help. I don't eat much fiber, that does not agree with me.

...if you have inflammation, it's not IBS! So I don't think much of that newsletter!

Haven't heard coconut mentioned before.

I've also read various credible reports promoting coconut oil for IBS and IBD.

I went to buy this at the 3 HFS and couldn't get it because it was back-ordered because it was in such high demand.

I think you should investigate this further and so will I. If I find the source of my info I will post it.

You can use it in place of oil or a soy margarine, but remember, it is a fat. new

I've read claims that it is good for all sorts of things like thyroid disease and diabetes, not just IBS. (Modern day snake oil?) As for being good for IBS, remember it is a fat, and fats are a MAJOR trigger, so if you use it, use very sparingly. Nonetheless I often sub it for the oil called in an IBS safe recipe since a semi-solid fat, like butter or margarine or coconut oil, often yields a more tender baked product than using oil.
