My "IBS" started in August 2002 following a severe panic attack and loss of consciousness on the highway. Ever since then I have been in and out of the hospital following recurring attacks every few months. In the interim period and till date I am mostly housebound due to my symptoms and excess fatigue. Neither the GE nor the shrink could help much. As of today due to weight loss from 62 kg/Aug 02 to 52 kg/Feb 03 I am mostly sleeping or too exhausted to do anything. I am not able to pull myself out of this situation and am feeling lonely and depressed. Can someone please understand and advice me as to what exactly I should do?

Arjun - Have they considered Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia as the culprits? Have you had an opportunity to read Heather's The First Year IBS? Have you changed your diet to include more soluble fiber and tried to figure out what triggers your attacks? I'm assuming you have diarrhea and not constipation since you're losing weight. Do you drink plenty of fluids to replenish your body with the fluids it loses during D bouts? Did you have tests run; i.e. colonoscopy to check out your colon? Did the docs run blood tests? What is the stress like in your life? Have you tried switching doctors until you find one that wants to help you?

There are so many things to consider. Sorry you're feeling so bad, both physically and mentally.

I feel for you - I too am coming out of a period of weight loss, mind due to the fact that I just pretty much stopped eating because everything made me so miserable, and the longer I let that go on the worse it felt to eat. I encourage you to read the section on Heather's site entitled, "What to Eat when you can't eat anything". I honestly wish I'd known that and stuck to it religiously about 3 months ago, I would have saved myself a lot of pain and fatigue and downright misery. Good luck to you!

There has been a lot of research, and I believe Heather mentions in her book that accupunture helps people. I had not gotten much support from my reg. drs. and I have had a lot of success to this treatment, but it can get pricy. I was at the point I felt I would sell my soul to the devil to feel well again, and that was a year ago. I occasionally have relapes, but nothing like it was. The accupunturist can work with both the stomach issues and the fatigue and will probably tell you that it is related to each other. If you decide to go this route, make sure that they are registered with your state (or however that works out of country), and that they give you a time line of treatment. You should not have to go every week forever, but possibly for the first 3 months. I am now at a point I go seasonally (every 3 months). I hope this helps, and that you know that I can relate.
