Hi Everyone!
I am new to this board and so glad I found this website. I was diagnosed with IBS about 12 years ago when I was in college. Once I reached grad school, the symptoms subsided, and I only had occassional attacks. I have been seriously dieting since December, and in the past month I have been a MESS. Frustrated that this has come back to haunt me, I decided to do an internet search after a bad attack at work after lunch today. (How times have changed - using the internet to research this problem wasn't a thought back in the early nineties!) and found this site. I also found that all of the things I have been religiously sticking to as part of my diet, are IBS trigger foods, and all the foods I avoid are the go foods! When I have a treat after losing five pounds - I eat all fo the Trigger Foods! I also picked up a horrible coffee habit in the last two years, which apparently is not helping, and I use about 8 packets of artificial sweetner a day - whatever brand happens to be around!

So, glad to be here, and starting today I am completely changing my diet and I'm excited to see what happens. I hope I do not re-gain weight, though.

My question is - what's the scoop on Splenda and IBS? Bad?

Thanks! And glad to be here!
Jennifer

Do a search on Splenda...it's come up before.

If you count calories or just keep track of how much you're eating, gaining weight shouldn't be a problem. Join in on the fitness board if you want...there's people losing and gaining weight or just trying to be more healthy.

Hi Jennifer,

First of all, Welcome! You came to the right place.

I was diagnosed with IBS about 5 years ago when I turned 55 (but suffered since I was 40). I'm very grateful for having lived so long without it, and feel very sorry for all you young gals who are suffering at such a young age.

You need to get Heather's book, "IBS, The First Year." It's our bible. It'll help you IMMENSELY. Stick to the diet, and you'll get better, I promise.

I too found Heather and these Boards through the internet. Thank you, Bill Gates! You BET times have changed! I remember when computers first came out and I was forced into using one at my office; I fought tooth and nail, but lost the battle (yet ended up winning the war!).

Ah, yes, coffee. Well, my dear, I can tell you that's the worst problem I bear: my 43-year-long addiction to coffee. If I could avoid it, my IBS would be in remission. Every time I have a cup, I end up with cramps and Big D. I've tried everything to ward off the symptoms, but nothing works, save giving up the coffee.

You have a two-year addiction? Girlfriend, if at all possible, give it up. And yes, artificial sweeteners are a trigger too. I know that's bad news -- but here's some good news: I can eat chocolate!

YAAAY! Life is sweet.

Glad you're here too. You'll get a LOT of help here.

Bev
