I need help; my wife has been suffering from IBS with severe constipation for 2 years now. She has never been treated, and after going to multiple doctors and specialist she feels like giving up. I'm trying to convince her to try "Zelnorm" but she doesn't want to go through any lab testing anymore. I feel as if she's becoming depressed and totally giving up, I can't get her to exercise or try other treatments. I feel very helpless when she has her daily attacks which seem to be coming more frequently? What can I do?

I am sorry you have had to become so desperate and she is so discouraged. This site is a great place to start. I would recommend that you copy off the list of safe soluble foods and the ones that she should be careful with. The first thing she needs is reassurance that there are foods that will not hurt her. She needs to chose a fiber source that she likes and helps with the constipation, I use benefiber, but there are several others that will help. If you are upset about what she is eating or how she is withdrawing it is normal. But it's not good for her to feel you hovering or that you are trying to controll something she can't change right now. If you give her the steps listed at the very start of Heathers home pages I can promise that she will begin to improve. Slowly, but will begin to have hope and trust in her abilities to deal with this. As for the drugs, each person here is different and some have been on that and done well, others have used natural drugs, and others have used different ones, or none at all. The true path through this illness is knowledge. This site will help a great deal and she will enjoy finding out the things that she can do for the attacks and stabiling the ibs. I will add you both to my prayer list and hope that you have success in getting controll of this illness.

Is your wife taking a soluble fibre supplement? It's absolutely key for constipation. Acacia, equalactin, benefiber, citrucel are all kinds she can try. Sometimes you have to try a couple to see which works best. Have her drink tons of water. Is she drinking any teas? Peppermint tea is great for pain, bloating, and overall GI disress. Fennel tea (crush fennel seeds 1tsp in a mug of boiling water using a tea strainer) is great for bloating and gas. Chamomile is also an overall good choice. And Ginger tea is good for nausea. Los of people mix the different kinds of tea. For example, have a mug of peppermin tea with some ginger or fennel seeds.
I would also print out Heather's cheat sheet. It will get you started in the right direction of what to eat and how to eat.
I hope your wife feels better soon.
