This is a condition which your innards are asking you to give it more fibre. Test yourself, take one tsp. Metamucil (forgot to mention product) per day before evening meal for first wk. observe if response is positive, negative or no effect. Then go to one tsp. twice daily for second wk. and if necessary, two tsps. twice a day for fourth wk. If the diagnosis is IBS the symptoms should be better. Then remain on that dose and possibly avoid more difficult tests. That's what a gastroenterologist said to me... It works for me with just 1 tsp. before main meal, once a day.

Your post interests me and kinda makes sense! For ages before I got full blown ibs I didn't eat enough proper fibre! I'm going to try it!

That seems to be upping fiber too quickly, but otherwise that is sort of right. There is more to IBS and more to diagnosing it than that. Frankly your doctor sounds a bit lazy and is simplifying things too much. But I am very glad it is working for you.

"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

It's SFS (soluble fibre supplement) that does this...NOT what most people think of as dietary fibre, eg. bran!!! That is IF and will make IBS worse if not eaten safely.

Glad it's working for you .. but Heather stresses over and over that IBS symptoms mimic many other afflictions so it is absolutley necessary to have a colonoscopy for a true IBS diagnosis, and a Doctor's consultation to rule everything else out.
