Hi-I've been using Heather's book for a couple of weeks now and doing really well-no attacks when I stuck to her plan. I"m frustrated today though because I had a bad attack this morning and can't figure out what triggered it. Two questions- one, I had a problem a while ago with attacks after drinking soy milk. Heather suggested cooking with it first to get used to it. I made Will's dreamy rice pudding with it and did great. However, last night, used some soymilk to soak bread for french toast and made a banana foster sauce with some soy milk in it too. Is it possible that didn't cook long enough to break down the bean sugar like cooking rice pudding did? Otherwise, ate lunch out and had a grilled chicken sandwich with small amount of shredded lettuce and tomato on white roll. Thought that would be safe? Any thoughts? Finally, drank fennel tea a couple of weeks ago and that seemed to WORSEN attack. Today drank peppermint tea and same thing happened- seemed to increase cramps and D. Any advice or input would be helpful. I'm really mad to be missing this gorgeous weather(we don't get much of it in Rochester, believe me ) Linda

Hi Linda - sorry to hear you're feeling bad. I'm not sure what it could have been. Did you use more soy milk than before? Or, have you been able to tolerate lettuce & tomato in the past? I can handle them fine, but I know some people cannot tolerate one/both at all. The only other thing I can think of, from looking at your post on the recipe exchange, is the carmalized walnuts. What are carmalized walnuts? Maybe this was the culprit?

Sorry I wasn't of more help. Hope you're feeling better to enjoy the gorgeous day soon.

Hi Mags- I appreciate your response. Yes, I've eaten lettuce and tomato as well as the walnuts (which are cooked in the microwave with water brown sugar and cinnamon to carmelize them) without a problem.I used a small amount of soy milk, but as I said it didn't cook for long, like it did the time I used it in the rice pudding recipe. The only other thing I can think of is I rode my bike for about 25 miles yesterday and maybe it put stress on my system, though I felt fine and drank plenty of water to keep from dehydrating. The weather wasn't hot or humid, which usually will affect me. So, I'll keep searching for answers. I am determined to overcome this!! Thanks again for your support. Linda

Maybe you have a 24 or 48 hour virus. It's so hard for those of us with IBS to know when one of those gets us--it's so similar to an attack. Is Peppermint tea helping any?

HI-no, the peppermint tea definitely did not help, in fact it seemed like my cramps were worse and the bouts of D went on longer than usual, after drinking the tea! Today was my first time trying the tea, but I had the same thing happen a couple of weeks ago when I tried fennel tea. So now I feel like just sticking to immodium which is what I usually use during an attack. Has anyone else had this problem with the tea?? Thanks for any input. Linda

I've also had bad reaction to peppermint, when I tried taking enteric peppermint capsules, I had a very bad attack. It seems to really trigger my gut into spasms. I had an accupuncturist tell me that I had a "heat deficiency" and that I should avoid foods that were cold, dairy, and mint. I avoid almost everything raw, and know also that some people even those without IBS can't handle lettuce very well for some reason. It is frustrating, when your reactions don't seem consistent - I know. If I were to eliminate everything that I'd ever eaten and then gotten ill, there wouldn't be much I could eat. Hang in there!

Thanks! You're the first person who mentioned that peppermint can trigger spasms! I thought I was going crazy! The capsules seem fine, but not the tea.

Thanks, Marla. I'm not sure what to think, given that last week cooking the rice pudding with soy milk was fine. In the past I had drunk a large glass of soy milk and that got really really ugly, so maybe I'll just stick to soymilk in the Will's dreamy rice pudding recipe (which is yummy by the way if you haven't tried it!):)

Just wondering, have you tried rice milk at all? Maybe you would tolerate it easier than the soy.

Hope you're feeling better.
