I want to try and start incorporating lentils and/or chickpeas into my diet. For those of you who eat lentils, do you buy them canned or dry? If dry, do you soak them overnight?

Are the Red lentils easier to digest? Or doesn't it matter what color they are?

Can anyone recommend some brands?

Thank you

I've never noticed any difference in digestibility in the different colors... they all seem to work the same way.

I only soak them first if the recipe calls for it, but usually it doesn't - lentils, and split peas as well, are pretty small and don't need presoaking.

I tend to buy Goya or whatever's cheapest.

Chickpeas - I almost always buy canned, just because it's easier. To be totally honest, dry chickpeas cooked taste a lot better to me, but they are work. They have to be soaked overnight, and then cooked for at least an hour. Canned is usually more practical for most people.

Mmm, chickpeas. Now I'm thinking about hummus, yum.

Hi,

The best brand of Canned Beans/Vegetables that I have found are from Eden Foods. The items are canned without salt or preservatives. They are organic and they are Kosher. They are pricey and not always easy to find...but the difference is worth it! You can also order items from their web site...in fact it might be cheaper to do it that way.

Hope that helps!

Karen

I could have sworn that I read somewhere that Heather had thought Red Lentils were less gassy. I just don't know one lentil from the other. So I'm asking the eating experts.

I just think the lentil itself will be challenge enough without the added onions and tricky spices, like in Amy's Lentil soup.

Yes they do!

They are generally just beans and some water/cooking fluid. They do have things like baked beans and refried beans (these are new) with other seasonings. I like the plain ones because I need to watch my sodium intake...I think the black beans only have 5mg of sodium. I get flour tortillas, and bake them in a non-stick fluted pan (use some Pam spray). Bake them for 10 minutes at 350 degrees and you have instant tortilla bowl. I like to mix chicken, black beans, canned tomatoes and add that to the tortilla bowl. Yum...now I am craving some...maybe for tomorrows dinner?

Ok, I told you I'd look. I but the PC Organic dry red lentils. And I have UNICO chickpeas in my cupboard. I mostlt buy Organic chickpeas but don't ahve any now and don't remember the brand. Just rinse them very well in a strainer after opening the can. Get rid of all that guck that they're packaged in.

Thanks, Tina. But what is PC short for something? Do you think it a Canadian food brand only? Here, all I can think of PC means is President's choice! A store brand name for Jewel foods and I don't think you have them in Canada.

Lentils- good choice! make sure to check the recipe board, tina posted a soup recipe for you! If you are wary on one of the ingredients you can always modify to your liking.
I love that lentils are so easy to make, and they seem easier on the system than other things. They are the first legumes I tried! I buy the dried ones cause they are so cheap and fast to make anyways.
As for chickpeas and other beans (black and kidney) I buy canned cause I think it is too much of a hassle to soak them. I buy the cheapest. (helps offset my other expensive IBS specific foods).
I don't like buying canned stuff cause of the sodium, but I figure it is ok til I learn how to cook beans better.
Also, if you need a quick on the go lentil soup, Progresso makes one, check to make sure it is the one that says '99% Fat Free'. THey have a nearly indentical one that has MSG in it, the 99% fat free doesn't, so check the ingredients too to make sure. Still has alot of sodium though!
Oh, and red lentils I think may be easier on the system, I didn't notice by eating them, but by cooking them they break down alot easier, I left them on too long once and it looked like I had mashed yams or something!
Good luck , and how is the fruit exploration going???

I took the plunge and actually tried some Amy's lentil soup after calling my doctors office complaining of no BM, even with zelnorm, and desperate for help. The nurse asked me what I had eaten in the past that had caused me some Diarrhea, back when that was my problem.

I remember eating lentils once and being in the bathroom immediately afterwards. So I broke through the fear out of desperation and ate some lentil soup (even though it contained onions too which are very gassy and I'm scared of these too) hoping to get some D. What I got was not D, but some BM! After days of nothing. I have eaten this soup 4 days in a row now, along with rice or potatos and the last 3 days I have gone! Unfortunately, I'm paying for it with horrible gas!!! I've been so terrified of beans that I never, ever would have tried these if not so desperate.

I did find this post from Heather confirming that lentils, especially Red lentils were a good place to start when incorporating bean type products. Here's just one Lentils

My fruit exploration is also progressing. I have tried blueberries instead of papaya in my moring cream of rice, but I'm worried because I can't cook them in the microwave so they pop as Heather suggested with oatmeal (which is gluten so off limits for now), and have tried unpeeled nectarines too, just because I was willing to do anything for a BM. Oh, also, have had 3 to 6 dried prunes too these last few days. Don't know if they are working or causing just gas.

I've been pretty darn gassy these past 4 days with the lentil soup with onions in it and prunes, and even tried 1/4 cup soy milk (chocolate) to my 3/4 cup rice milk, so that's more gas!
But I have managed a BM with addition of colace, SFS, magnesium, and zelnorm.

Thanks for telling me about the recipe Tina posted. I usually don't go into the recipe board.

Does the progresso soup have onions in them? I would rather make my own so I can omit the onions to reduce the gas. I just want the high fiber.

What brand of lentils do you buy? I can't find red lentils. Or do you use regular kind now? Do you soak the lentils before cooking?

Thanks for asking! I'm sure I gave you more info than you wanted!

I didn't see it because I usually don't visit the Recipe board. I thought you were going to email it to me. So, I've tried Amy's canned for now, but would rather make my own.

I'll check out the recipe. Thanks for going to the trouble. I don't know what brand PC is. Does PC stand for something? Maybe it can't be found in US? Also, haven't found red lentils yet.

Will I ever get over the gassiness of lentils? They are killing me tonight. But then I've had them 4 days in a row for the BM effect. None for me tomorrow!!!
