Bromelain is awesome for inflammation, bones, joints, protein digestion/assimilation and nutrition absorption. Papayain--I spelled this wrong--but the enzymes in papaya are good for the gut too. Digestive enzymes basically help your gut get things going to process and assimilate the components of food, i.e. protease (for protein), lipase (for fat), amylase (for starches), maltose (sugars), cellulose (for cellulose/fibers), etc. I take vegetarian enzymes which do not contain gelatin/pancreatin.

So bromelain would work for soy? That's fantastic!

Thanks
Kate!!!

You could try it/test it--the bromelain--and see if it helps with soy digestion, or rather indigestion...and overall digestion/nutrient assimilation. Go to a natural food store and you'll find vegan/kosher digestive enzyme options.

Seriously, though...it's easy to be a soy-free vegan. Reminder: it's hard not to get enough protein!
Also, let me reiterate that often those that have problems with wheat have difficulty with soy.
So, listen to your body...if it says, "no soy," than no-soy-be it!

Kate.

I have IBS with severe diarrhea. I just started with the diet and Acacia. I have soy milk now with cereal but am looking for something to put on all the bread I now have to eat. I have been using I Can't Believe It's Not Butter as it is low in fat...but see from the posts there are soy alternatives to this. I have looked in the grocery store but to no avail so I assume these products are at a health food store. I am having to learn to eat differently at 62 so this is quite a challenge for me. I have lost quite a bit of weight as it took the doctors two years of testing me for everything to finally decide I have IBS. Nothing stays in me.....goes right through!! I would appreciate all the help I can get. I am trying......

Welcome to the boards! And yes, it's a lot to take in and learn, but you can do it - hang in there!

I Can't Believe It's Not Butter has dairy in it, and I would suggest avoiding it if you can. Smart Balance Light (it has to be the LIGHT one!) is the only grocery-store margarine I've found that doesn't contain any dairy at all. I'm very sensitive to both dairy and fats, and I've had no problem with it whatsoever. But if you decide to go the route of a soy margarine, check your local health food store. I'm a big fan of Soy Garden's taste - it's very good - but it's got the same fat content as butter or full-fat margarine, so you do need to go easy on it.

Good luck!

Hi Melissa, I eat what you had for supper just about every
night and I've had 3 to 4 BM's every morning in the recent
past. However I'm also taking 25mg of Paxil which I think is
the key factor for the BM's. Did you stop taking the Zelnorm?
That wasn't clear, and what dose are you taking? You can take
up to(I think it's) 6mg if you need to. Also, if you have
Miralax, take a dose of that today, and make sure you're
drinking lots of water, it probably won't get you going
today, but tomorrow morning it should. Also, no, beano
won't hurt you, but fennel tea would probably work better
for gas. -Bob

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I will look for the Smart Balance Light. I thought it had to be soy if it didn't contain dairy...Boy I do have a lot to learn!! I am extremely sensitive to dairy and fat also. I think I can live without the cheese and eggs....but dry plain bread was just toooooo much!!
