This is confusing. I started a modified version of the diet a week ago as an experiment. Basically I cut out sugar and many carbs (while still keeping soluble fiber in via other foods). Unfortunately I also ended up having to take a megadose of antibiotics on Monday due to some dental work. A day later, I felt 100% better. Felt good for 2 full days and part of another one. No D, no cramps, no gas. First time in many months. My husband and I celebrated! Then the symptoms started to slowly return. I'm not as bad as I was prior to this week, but I'm heading in that direction. It seems to me that it may have been the antibiotics that helped.
Note: I haven't gotten a definitive IBS diagnosis as yet. Still waiting on one more set of tests. Those tests should show if I have a bacterial infection of some kind.
Curious if anyone has any thoughts on why the brief improvement. Hope it happens again!! It was great to feel normal again!

Get a fecal sample test! Antibiotics are bad for IBS so them making you feel better suggests there is some infection going on down there. Find out what it is and maybe your GI can blast it!

Yep, I had had tests done a few weeks ago and just got the results. I have multiple bad bugs--candida overgrowth, bacterial overgrowth, and some indicators of inflammation. So that's why the antibiotics helped. I also tested positive for casein, egg, and soy allergy. I already have a known gluten intolerance.
Anyway, it seems that I may not have IBS, or I have IBS as a result of the intestinal imbalance and food allergies.
At this point I'm supposed to eliminate most sugars and carbs from my diet (no rice, cereal, etc., limited fruit), so I'm trying to figure out things to eat that provide enough soluble fiber. Always open to suggestions.
Thanks! Judith

Judith, There have been a number of studies about this including one fairly recently that Heather probably has in the Research Library. For some reason, antibiotics do sometimes seem to cause an improvement in the IBS symptoms, but it's never permanent and as soon as the antibiotics are finished it goes back to normal IBS mode.
At least that's what I've read! Hope you enjoyed the couple of days reprieve!!
