Also have you tried Omega 3? It contains fish oil, flax seed oil and borage. It helps with IBS (I read that on the web), PMS (which IBS is effected by), depression (which most IBSers have to some degree) and it good for the heart. I could tell I had improvement. If you are eating the flax seed, maybe you should try this supplement which has more benefits in one!

I can't comment on the colace. I am a C but have never had a hard stool. (I know I'm blessed.) It just doesn't come out. With enough sfs and water I have pretty reliable stools. Don't get me wrong I also have to take glycolax 2X a day. That sucks up water too. Now I also have to follow the diet but the combination works wonders. Until I upped my water I had no luck.
