I'm thinking of skipping Christmas dinner with the relatives

I don't know about you guys, but the stimulation of the Christmas season along with the stress at work has given me a nasty D flare-up. I've been on the bland food diet for the past couple of days and so far (knock on wood) everything's holding. I'm afraid if I eat the food at Christmas dinner (nothing bland there, believe me), I'll be asking for trouble. Plus, I'm burned out and don't feel up to visiting. I don't even want to go to my job's staff dinner celebration. Am I being a scrooge?

I feel the exact same way. This is my first holiday season with IBS-C.

You're not being a scrooge. I understand not wanting to celebrate when you simply can't. Is there a way that you can go with your own food? Plain turkey breast is safe. If you offer to mash the potatoes, you could use chicken broth instead of milk to thicken them. They'd be safe. Stuffing if it is white bread is usually fairly safe. Cranberry sauce is fairly safe. Cooked vegetables are fairly safe if you eat them with soluble fibre. Just a few ideas, or as I said, bring your own plate of food. If anyone asks, it's up to you how much you want to divulge.

Because of my husband's job we do alot of socializing. At meals I can always find a roll or plain rice or something bland to eat, but it's at dessert that I feel deprived. So I started to bring my own dessert with me whenever we are invited to someone's house to eat. Last Saturday, I bought a basket full of ADBs in muffin form tied up with a pretty bow. (The recipe has exactly enough batter to make 12 muffins I huse 1/4 c. of batter for each muffin and bake them for 25 minutes). Now i don't feel like sulking while everyone is indulging on desserts.

You know, this is the WORST part of the condition,it brings me to tears knowing that I can't celebrate like everyone else without suffering for at least a week. This illness will now darken every holiday of my life from now until they have effective medical treatments-which at the current rate of research, will probably be just as I'm dying of cancer in my 60's.I feel for Digby and all the other IBSers suffering with that horrible Christmas choice of having a little joy you can remember and being willing to pay the price later-or eating plain toast while everyone else gorges.I personally choose the former unless there's no choice but to stay well. This year,I have a week and half to kill with no serious commitments,so I fully plan on going to hell in a handbasket and paying the price later.Got my peppermint oil tablets, fennel tea,Corn Chex,Cheerios, bananas and a good clean bathroom standing by for the next 2 weeks. And sedative pills if it gets uncontrollable.Bring it on.My 2nd top New's Year's Resolution:By next Christmas to have mastered the recipes in both Heather's book and posted at the other board sufficiently to be able to have a wonderful holiday with all delicious IBS safe food! And that should be the goal of ALL of us-Heather's diet and these recipes are living proof of necessity being the mother of invention and that there is no reason to have to live on toast and tea for the rest of our lives.Such thinking results from stubborness and a childish refusal to accept change and nothing more.
A MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND SEE YOU ALL IN 2005!
