Hi guys!
This is my first posting, so be nice!
I have a question about gerd & peppermint oil/capsules. I have been diagnosed with GERD, IBS and slow colonic transfer. I am taking nexium (perscription medicine) for the symptoms of GERD, I tried peppermint capsules today and had a awesome day in relation to my IBS, I am a bit weary as I read that peppermint can affect my GERD symptoms. Is there a better option for a anti-spasmodic that dosn't interfere with my GERD symptoms?? also would the nexium cancel the symptoms out in relation to GERD?

Thanxs plenty
Confused-Samuamu

Welcome to the boards! First, if you took the peppermint capsules today with little problem, good news! Chances are it won't affect your GERD. Peppermint can cause problems with people with GERD. I don't know of anti spasmodics other than peppermint. There are lots of other things to help your IBS symptoms. Fennel is great for bloating, Ginger is great for nausea and an upset tummy, and chamomile is good all round. None of them are anti spasmodics, though. You might want to try them anyways. They're really helpful. Hopefully, since the peppermint oil capsules are in capsule form, they'll get down far enough into your stomach before it bursts, and won't affect your GERD. If you haven't had problems so far, I would say keep taking it! It will be abundantly obvious if they become a problem.
Hugs, Han.

Welcome. I am IBS A but mostly D and I also have the GERDs. I am on the Nexium for my GERDs as well. I love peppermint tea for my IBS symptoms but I can only have 1 cup a day due to my GERDs. If I have too much peppermint then I get major heartburn even w/ the Nexium. I told doc about this and she prescribed me an anti-spasmadic NuLev which I take if I feel my tummy becoming iffy in place of a cup of peppermint tea. But I still have a cup of peppermint tea in the morning to start off my day and the 1 cup seems to be fine. Good Luck. You just have to find your limits w/ the peppermint and your GERDs.

Dear Hearts;
Samuamu has raised an important issue regarding those of us with both GERD and IBS/Crohn's relating to an AWFUL experience of mine.My GERD comes and goes,so I usually just take a lot of maximum strength Mylanta for it.But if course,that has long term risks with aluminum toxicity,etc.My internest has attempted several times to get me on proton pump suppressors like Nexium and Protonix.Although they work wonders for GERD,each time,within a few days of starting the medication,my insides feel like they've been scraped with sandpaper and become hypersensitive to the point where WATER sets off spasms! That and I have trouble digesting my food,no matter what I eat.My question-any people in here have the same problems with proton pump suppessors for GERD-it takes care of the acid,but wreaks havoc with the IBS?
Sincerely,
Andrew L.

Sounds like maybe the they're too strong for you? Why don't you try taking Tums(if you're IBS-D) or Rolaids? Neither one causes toxicity.

...they're supposed to be fine with GERDS - it's only a few of us who can't handle them. Just stay away from NON-enteric coated (what should keep it away from your tummy) peppermint.
