Hi everyone! I am new to this and hope someone can help me here. I am IBS-A and I have known for a long time that MSG is a major trigger and I do everything I can to make sure I don't eat any. But someone told me that there are different versions of MSG-like products that can cause the same attacks. I think it was anything that says a hydrolyzed or autolyzed protein that is a way of doing the same thing as MSG but there is no actual MSG so it looks safe. Does anyone know about this? Thanks a million. Erin

look here: msg sources

also, be careful about carageenan- its similar chemically and causes some of us (me!) reactions just hte same as MSG.

All my digestive enzymes, which I take 3 times a day at least, my L-glutamine, as well as my probiotic (I think that one too)have gelatin capsules. Do I need to stop taking them as they contain MSG according to that article? I think I need my digestive enzyme and probiotic?

What should I do Amie?

just trust the source and talk to the manufacturer to check on if they ahve things or not... I do get migraines from MSG as well as stomach symptoms, so sometimes I'm very wary...

Holy cow - thanks for the info. There are some soups that I thought were okay because it did not say MSG or monosodium glutamate but there was the hydrolyzed or autolyzed. I will now look for that other one too. Being a student I don't have a lot of time to cook but I think I am going to have to. Thanks!

I don't understand your response, Amie. Are you saying it's okay to take them even though the bottle says they are a gelatin capsule?

I just looked and the walgreens brand gas x do have gelatin listed in the ingredient. Gelatin was listed on that website amie loaded down saying that gelatin contains MSG. So, I don't know what to do now.

PS I love your HUGS!

Not all gelatin has MSG.. talk to the pharmacist.. that list includes things that MIGHT have MSG in them without it being labeled... I take some things that are capsules because I have spoken tot he pharmacist and been assured that the brand used in those pills doesn't include the msg... just be careful- its not saying avoid everything on hte possibles list, just to be more cautious because of it... so far I'm migraine free..
