Digestive Enzymes- a waste of money?

Do most people here take digestive enzymes? Or are they just a big waste of money? If you do take them, can you offer some brand names? Are there any side effects, like gas or bloat? Do you take them at every meal and every snack or just when there might be a difficult food, like an insoluable?
Thanks

Before I even learned about the IBS diet, i started taking digestive enzymes because my aunt suggested them. I think they help me. My Aunt and Mom who are "normal" people who can eat anything, also think they help.

We take one from the Home Shopping Network (hsn.com), called Andrew Lessman's Your Vitamins Digest Assure. It contains amylase, celluase, lipase, protease, lactase, papain, bromelain, in a gelatin caplsule, and no other additives or fillers. The bottle also explains what each enzymes helps with such as celluase helping to digest fiber. It is probably expensive compared to other brands, i think I pay like $60 for 180 capsules.

You should check at a Health food store for a similiar product.

I think they help, but I still get gas and bloating if I eat anything really bad, but overall I think they do help.

I take one before lunch and one before dinner, not any with snacks.

I've tried this product and it didn't do a thing for me. I wasted my money on it. In my opinion, the company is just trying to "cash in" on the IBS crowd by marketing a product that says IBS on the label.

But that's just my own personal opinion. Thanks for trying to help though. It was worth a try, unfortunatly didn't do anything for me.

I take them. I have been taking a simple papaya enzyme for a very long time. It is one of the things that made a difference for me. I take it right after I eat every lunch and supper. They are chewable and I buy them at Wal-Mart -- though I have bought other brands.

I have tried other things and haven't noticed any more of a difference -- but I am already stable. So it doesn't mean that they wouldn't help someone who isn't.

Would you mind filling out my probiotic survey as well!!! I know I ask a lot of questions. I don't mean to be a pest. Just anxious for answers!
Thanks again

I took them for a while and didn't notice too much of a difference. If I'm going to eat something questionable, I might still pop a few. I find a couple of beano or gas-x to be just as effective!

Taking it one day at a time.....

Looks like it's a mixed bag of opinions on whether they are needed or not. I know they can't hurt to take, but would love to save the money if they aren't really needed.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts
