Hi all, Im fairly new to this and I wonder if anyone could tell me what I should/should not be looking for on packaging when I am shopping.
I have Heathers book so I am aware of the obvious ones such as dairy, sweetners, eggs, red meats, too much fat etc. But is there anything else I need to be aware of?? and also what would you say is an acceptable amount of fat per serving of something, crisps, snack bar etc.
Many thanks.

Your rule of thumb should be as low fat as possible. Look for fat free, low fat options on everything. Stock yourself up on rice, pasta, potatoes, and go for the veggies. Keep lots of chicken/white turkey in your freezer. And as for an acceptable amount of fat, well everyone's different. Some can tolerate more than others. You'll just have to see what you can tolerate. But keep an eye out for the low fat and fat free things - they are really the best option.

Watch out for sneaky ingredients like casein, lactose and whey (all dairy!). And Monosodium Glutamate (MSG).
With the fat content, it's the percentage of calories from fat that matters, not the number of grams. Aim for 25% or lower for each meal or snack. If anything's fried then it'll be bad.

Very good rules of thumb(s)!
I also like to keep very safe foods farther ahead on the shelves of my fridge or pantry, so I'll opt to go for those instead of having to reach farther back and grabbing the not-so-safe foods.

we keep Dh's not safe foods in a different cabinet and in the drawer in the fridge!
funny thing he eats more of my safe foods then his stuff most fo the time!
another thing... some people find they are sensitive to MSG and or Carageenan- I am for other reasons (headaches) but mom finds they aggravate her tummy problems too!
and remember to remove meats other then poultry and fish.. red meat, pork and venison...
