Hello everyone, first time poster here. I am 22 and have had IBS for about 3 years now. I was pretty much unaffected by it until a couple of months ago. Recently i have also been diagnosed with Non Ulcer Dsypepsia, the equivalent of Upper Gut IBS. My main concern is the nausa and pain i feel in the morning after breakfast. My stomach seems to tolerate lunch and dinner 10 times better. But anyway, I was wondering what i should be eating on an empty stomach.
Please help poor ole student Rob

Welcome Rob! First question: What are you eating in the morning? I used to eat cereal with milk for years until I realized I couldn't tolerate milk. Now I know why my mornings were always so miserable. Now I take a bentyl in the morning and actually wait until I get to work to eat a blueberry waffle or bagel. Not the most nutritious breakfast but........ I know people on the board have switched to soy type milks but I'm chicken to try them so I just stick to my plain old breakfast and I'm fine with it.
I too can usually tolerate lunch and dinner fine, however, I'm just a regular IBS'r. Dyspepsia is different so I'm not sure what to tell you to eat. Just thought I'd let you know that I used to have terrible mornings and now I don't I'm sure someone on the board can help ya with a menu! Good luck!

I think some toasted white bread with some IBS-safe margarine would be a very gentle thing for you. Or oatmeal if you like it. You need to have something as pain can be worse on an empty stomach.

Welcome. I used to feel terrible in the morning after breakfast because I was eating eggs or cereal and milk. I now eat oatmeal make with vanilla soy milk, a little brown sugar and blueberries. My stomach never hurts after breakfast anymore. I am still nervous to eat before I go to work so I cook my oatmeal at home and take it to work and eat when I get there. I am worried about sitting in traffic after eating. Some things are difficult to let go of.
Good luck finding the right breakfast that doesn't make you feel sick.

As others have suggested - Start the day with soluable fiber and water.
My husband (IBS-A) makes this smoothy every morning:
2 bananas 1 soy fruit yogert splash of soy milk
Variations: 1) add honey or cocoa powder 2) add egg whites (like egg beaters)- to add protein 3) add frozen whole blueberrys/strawberrys
He wakes up makes the shake puts it into the freezer then gets ready for the day and drinks on way to work.
Then on weekends will have the oatmeal from Heather's cookbook.
Or, plain bagle with Tofuti brand Cream-cheese
Good luck

My husband had very bad nausea and found that he had to eat small meals more often. If he felt too full he would get that awful nausea. He did take pepto during that time. I don't know what is safe for you but I thought I would pass that along.
Sorry your not feeling well.

I've had an ulcer and I also get stomach discomfort in the morning if I eat the wrong thing or too much at once. I'm usually starving in the morning, but I eat my breakfast in stages. Start with a single bowl of oat meal, a cup of herbal tea and then maybe a probiotic. (If you're pressed for time there are alot of non-dairy instant oat meals out there just make sure you read the ingredients first.) If your'e still hungry, wait a half an hour and try a bowl of cereal with soy milk. That usually does it for me but if you are still hungry after that try a bannana or a cup of apple sauce. (read the ingredients in the apple sauce before you buy it. I found out the hard way, that some apple sauces contain High fructose corn syrup.) So take it slowly and make sure that your breakfast contains lots of soluble fiber. I hope you feel better soon. Chany

Thanks everyone for the advice, its nice to know one is not alone in this. I have been reading the advice on this site and it is at times contrary to what i have been told by doctors. I was told to avoid white bread and increase bran, and now the site tells me to eat white bread over whole wheat, i am confused.
