Hi! I'm new to the board. I've been struggling with IBS for a year and have tried Bentyl and Zelnorm. The zelnorm worked a bit, but not completely, and I still struggle with constipation. Everything I eat seams to irritate my tummy and I am constantly bloated. I do have an appointment with a specialist, but think I need immediate dietary advice! My first question is this: for applesauce...can I eat a regular, store-bought brand, or are they full of "bad" things that might set me off? Currently, I can safely eat white rice, cheerios, and (for some reason) chicken noodle soup. I am at war with food right now, and a starting place, with simple suggestions, would be great. Oh...Heather, I did order "Eating for IBS," but right now, I just want to be able to start eating SOMETHING...no matter how simple. Thanks!

Welcome sueangell!

For applesauce, make sure it does not have any artficial sweetners. Most do not have additivies, as long as you get 'unsweetened'. I sometimes buy Motts brand, at my grocery store they have an organic one that is unsweetened. Has appples and water, that's it! but, you do not need organic, I just prefer it.
And make sure that your chicken nooodle soup isn't too high in fat or has MSG (monosodium glutamate) in it. Sometimes something can bother me down the road, even if it doesn't aimmediately, and I have heard others say the same.
Good luck with the book, it is an excellent resource!

Thanks, Nelly! Thanks, Sheri!

I'm starting to realize that even though I don't eat a lot of "intentional" fat, my diet might have some hidden triggers. Gah! This is hard. I already have a son with food allergies, so food is anything but friendly!

Thanks for the applesauce advice. I will go get that, and plain (white) bread tonight. And some good soup. I also have discovered this last week that just making sure to take a beano before EVERY meal seems to help. I'm not sure if that's healthy, though. I have to ask the specialist when I see them. Does anyone have any ideas about that? I'd appreciate the input!

I am not a Dr. but when my children were very young we had to give mylacon (sp?) drops for gas. He said that I could give as much as I felt necessary that there was no danger to the baby. So, I am thinking the same is true for Beno. Let us know if you hear something different.

Welcome,
Lefty

I am not a Dr. either, but Beano is an enzyme and you can take it every day without worry.

Also, try some peas and carrots (in the can) they are excellent insoubles. Are you taking a SFS? That helps a lot too.

For breakfast you could try some eggbeaters with a sour dough muffin or a smoothie.

Hope this helps and welcome aboard!

Thank you! I was trying to remember the name of the egg white stuff that you could buy in a carton if you didn't want to eat yolks! Eggbeaters! Wonderful.

I wanted to thank all of you who replied. This weekend I was very careful about what I ate, and I have to admit, the gas was a lot less bothersome. I avoided all wheat (I'm pretty sure), stuck to dairy-free food, and most importantly (I think) gave up my morning cup of coffee. I don't have a coffee habit, but that one cup must have been throwing me over the edge. I even managed to survive one chocolate cupcake for my son's b-day party (with eggs and lots of fat!) without any adverse reactions. I'm sure eating sensibly for the rest of the day contributed to this small, but very significant success. Thank you all for your help!

I have IBS-C, too, and am new as well. I've been on Heather's diet for about a month. I'm so C that I have to eat lots of insolubles & wheat, I think. I really get bloated & backed up when I don't get enough insolubles. (To tell the truth, I'm still very C even on Heather's diet so far.)

I've been making bread in my bread machine. I've been using white flour, wheat flour, & a little oatmeal. That mixture is fine for me. Plus, it tastes great!

There are lots of tasty recipes in Heather's book. You'll enjoy it!

Right now, I'm watching what I eat, taking acacia, & taking Zelnorm for my C. I, too, ate some "naughty" things over the weekend because I went to 2 Christmas dinners. Had no ill effects at all, though.

Welcome!
