Hello everyone, I'm new to posting but not to the site. I've been IBS-D since age 9, diagnosed in my early 20's,but didn't find this website and Heather's book until this past February, 10 LONG years later. Have been feeling pretty good and lost 17 pounds so far This way of life (people get confused when I call this way of eating a "diet") has been a Godsend for me.
My question/questions are about Metamucil. I know it's recommended to take it first thing in the morning, but has anyone found a difference in eating before or after the dose? And what about water temperature? I find it easier to swallow if the water is luke-warm.

I'm glad to hear the diet is doing you good! I will try to answer your question. I believe fiber supplements are best taken while you eat or during your meal. My GI specialist encourages that to reduce the possibility of gas from the SFS. However I thought I have heard Heather say metamucil is not the recommended fiber supplement, maybe someone here knows or maybe others take it but I thought citrucel or benefiber causes less gas for the powder type fibers. Hope this helps!

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

I can't take metamucil- makes me much worse... I take acacia or benefiber instead...

I do take mine right before or with a meal most of the time... depends on what I'm eating, occasionally it will be a longer time between.. I never take it in water though, can't stand it that way.. metamucil made me much worse though for what its worth, so if it works- keep it up, I'm A leaning to D more then C... some people here who are C do take metamucil without problems.. I get more crampsand bloat then anything...

Hi Maye and welcome. My story is a bit similar to yours. I've had IBS since I was a kid but was only diagnosed about 6 months ago. I'm currently taking Benefibre (I've only had a few doses so I'm certainly not an expert) and am an IBS-A. I find I can't take Metamucil as it gives me terrible gastric pains but haven't had any trouble in that area with the benefibre yet, however I took my first lot within 40 minutes of dinner the first time and it made me bloat so bad I was in pain (plus I put it in a smoothie which probably didn't help) then last night I took it 2 1/2 hours after dinner in cordial and had a fennel tea immediately afterwards (on the wonderful advice of Heather and Atomic Rose) and didn't have a problem. Good luck. I'm glad you found us. It's so nice to talk to people who understand.

Unfortunately, Metamucil is the only option available to me. I live in a really small town, and the local drug store doesn't have the space/customer support to bring in extra stuff. I haven't found it to make me bloaty, but I have noticed it works through my system within a half hour, usually less. I usually take it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning and was wondering if eating first would slow down the process.

I sure understand the spare choices living in a small rural area myself. I used to take Metamucil, in warm water, around 5-6pm, I found that it reduced my appetite at night.

I had to quit taking it because of the abdominal distress it was causing me, alot of gas and bloating. I tried Benefiber, my body did not like it at all. Right now, I am taking no SFS, knowing that I need to, I just haven't decided, maybe I will try the Citrucel next.

Glad to have you here, hope we can help you !!!

Hi again. Maybe cause you live in a small place (providing of course the Metamucil doesn't agree with you ) you could try ordering Heathers Acacia? Or do you have any friends that have access to it that could send you some? Can't really help with the metamucil, I stopped taking it as it made me hurt too much.
