Hi everyone! Sorry I keep asking mundane questions but I'm really trying to get the hang of the diet(I started it today after hunting all over Canberra to try and find what I needed). Okay, here goes: # Is HFCS labelled as corn syrup or is it labelled as something else? I've noticed lot's of things have glucose and fructose so I was wondering if these aren't HFCS are these okay?
# I've discovered I loathe rice milk (especially in hot cocoa, blech!!!! plus there's only one brand here and it's pretty revolting) and I think I have a soy intolerance (but am trying it out slowly just to be sure) so I was wondering if goats milk is okay or if it's as bad as cow's milk? #Which brings me to this one....when you say introduce soy slowly how slowly is that? Eg 1/2 cup once a day for a week then 1 cup once a day for a week? I'm hopeless I know # And last but not least what is chex cereal made from? They don't sell it in Aus. and I'm looking for a substitute. Okay, thanks for answering my dull questions, belive me it's very much appreciated (and I apologise for it, I'm one of those people who drive those they love nuts asking questions). See you around the boards

Hi Amy I asked nearly all the same questions so I have some of the answers- some of the guys should be able to help out with the rest
Quote:
# Is HFCS labelled as corn syrup or is it labelled as something else? I've noticed lot's of things have glucose and fructose so I was wondering if these aren't HFCS are these okay? HFCS is corn syrup and its widely used in the US but not as much anywhere else, I have only found one product that has it here. Our alternative appears to be glucose fructose syrup which I understand isn't as bad but if you overdoes on refined sugars in general its bad. Of course it all depends on whether its a trigger for you! MSG is one of my worst triggers but others on the boards have no issues with it at all # I've discovered I loathe rice milk (especially in hot cocoa, blech!!!! plus there's only one brand here and it's pretty revolting) have you tried rice dream plain and vanilla, play around with them, maybe water them down? There's also almond milk out there, I haven't tasted it but you never know... and I think I have a soy intolerance (but am trying it out slowly just to be sure) so I was wondering if goats milk is okay or if it's as bad as cow's milk? goats milk is a no-no as it has lactose etc in it- thread #Which brings me to this one....when you say introduce soy slowly how slowly is that? Eg 1/2 cup once a day for a week then 1 cup once a day for a week? I'm hopeless I know pass # And last but not least what is chex cereal made from? Rice Chex are made of rice, corn chex made of corn, Do you have Kelloggs Crispix, they are the closest I can get but they are very sweet. This is the che website Cereal wise I eat Rice Krispies/Bubbles, cheerios, cornpops and porridge They don't sell it in Aus. and I'm looking for a substitute. Okay, thanks for answering my dull questions, belive me it's very much appreciated (and I apologise for it, I'm one of those people who drive those they love nuts asking questions). See you around the boards Don't ever be sorry for asking questions! Like I said I asked very similar ones myself!

And I'll answer the last one... I think your method of introducing soy "slowly" is about right. You could probably increase the amount after a few days, instead of a week, but go with how you feel - if it seems to be bothering you at 1/2 cup after a few days, then I'd say you're intolerant, and don't try to increase it... at least for now.
And I say *that* because back when I was very sick with the IBS symptoms, I couldn't tolerate any soy at all. Now that I'm a little more stable, I can eat/drink ANYTHING soy with no problems. So you never know.
Good luck, and keep asking questions!

Wow Sinead I hadn't heard that HFCS wasn't used so much outside the US. Do you think I need to mention no HFCS bread for the B&Bs I am going to in the UK in spring? or do you think it probably won't be in there?
Anyway about HFCS. It says it written out in long form on products that have it. If it says fructose or corn syrup we can have it. So my eye is trained to spot that 'high fructose corn syrup' on labels now and I think I can do it pretty good and fast!

Tamara,
I have never seen HFCS or corn syrup in bread over here. I had never heard of HFCS until I came on the boards and your B&B landlady is unlikely to have either!
I Have two "sliced pans" (toast bread) in the house and these are the ingredients. I have never had a problem eating toast etc made from this bread
Wheat flour, water, yeast, salt, vegetable oil, aoya flour, emulsifiers (mono- and di- acetyltartaric esters of mono- and di-glycerides of fatty acids, mono- and di-glycerides of fatty acids, sodium stearoyl lactylate) Dextrose, preservative (calcium propionate) Flour Treatment agent (ascorbic acid) Folic acid.
I was unsure about dextrose so I looked it up- Quote:
Dextrose is "A form of glucose, so named because it is "dextrorotatory"
and maybe this is supposed to be bad for us but I honestly never have a problem with it in bread anyway...
I have done some searching and have found that HFCS and dextrose are NOT the same thing...but is dextrose bad?
There IS dextorose in HFCSQuote:
HFCS is made by treating dextrose (High DE syrup) with isomerase
I wonder if its the dextrose that is the problem or the isomerase? Heather Van V can you shed any light on this?
Other UK people..can you eat sliced pan without problems?

Sliced pan-- I love it! I haven't heard that since I was in O'Meath!!
Coke overseas doesn't even have hfcs. They use cane sugar instead. Not that we should be drinking coke, tho!! I think it tastes like vegetable juice without the hfcs (ugh!), but that's just me!
Hfcs is a very American product. The U.S. keeps cane sugar at a 400% artificially inflated price, essentially pricing the American food industry out of using it as a cheap additive. It's been this way for years, which is why most American products use corn sweeteners as a cheap subsitute.
Ugh, Follow the money, all the way to the bathroom.

Thanks guys, this has been a lot of help. When I went shopping the other day I was wondering what on earth I was going to eat. Pretty much everything that didn't contain dairy products or whole wheat had glucose and fructose so I started worrying. I will introduce the soy slowly as said. I don't mind fresh soy milk (long life is pretty revolting) and it comes in some yummy flavours like chocolate, strawberry and a berry mix. I have to admit I've cheated a little on the diet (I had some lettuce last night with my dinner) so I should probably get in gear and do it properly. Even so I am feeling okay today for the first time in months. Anyway, thank you all for your help

Thanks Sinead for the answer. It is good to know I don't have to mention HFCS. I think dextrose, glucose, sucrose and plain fructose are ok. But i think sucrose is supposed to be the easiest to digest. Could be wrong though. But wouldn't HFCS be fructose based for its sugar? HMMM?
