Yeap! That's what the GP said when I went to her for help, hoping she could recommend a good stool softener or suppository (or something that works better and quicker than laxatives!)...All she did was prescribe Fybogel (which I already have in abundance!) and told me to eat more weetabix, before proclaiming (in a condescending manner) that ALL fibre is soluble...Riiiiiight...

I have lost all faith in the NHS...

Off to make some 'zhou' - rice porridge which is full of soluble fibre goodness,

!!!

I don't even know what to say - I'm speechless! Horrible, horrible, horrible!!

As if IBS isn't bad enough without braindead docs! Sorry, Charme. Hopefully you'll find someone who'll listen to you, or at least get you the meds and help you need~

Wow, my (UK) GP sounds much better than yours - he told me to increase my intake of soluble fibre as much as possible in my diet - oats, rice, try white bread instead of wholegrain, lots of veggies and fruit. He also prescribed 'Normacol' - a soluble fibre supplement very much like Acacia, but in granule form rather than a fine powder. My GP says that the Fybogel stuff & psyllium can just make things much worse - Normacol is much more gentle. It's a vegetable gum from the karaya tree. Ask your GP to prescribe this - it's widely available, or you may be able to buy it over the counter, I'm not sure. One word of warning - Normacol-PLUS contains a laxative which you DON'T want. You want the standard NORMACOL.
It's worth a try?

Hiya Shells,

I'm from the UK too...Notice you're in the NW region? Whereabouts? I'm in Lancs...Living in Blackpool (Shhh...it's a bit of an embarrassment!! I'm not REALLY from B'pool though!), but may soon be moving either to Lytham or Poulton...and I go to uni in Preston.

I've been to 5 GPs, even to the hospital, and not a single one of them recommended soluble fibre...to them, roughage is roughage, and there's nothing to distinguish one type of fibre from another...

Having said that, General Practitioners aren't really specialists in any field, so I've learnt not to pay too much attention to what they say...This isn't the first time they've made a mistake (I'd been wrongly diagnosed far too many times!!), and it certainly won't be the last...

I'll go check out the supplement you mentioned...I'm already on acacia..Just started taking it actually, so it's early days yet...Still, finding out more about other alternatives can't make things any worse than they already are!!...er...I hope!

Do you know if fibre in capsule form would be any help at all?

Wishing all happy colons,
Charme

Hi there,
I have to say I'm not really surprised, most of the docs I've been to haven't acknowledged any difference between types of fibre - that's docs I've seen here (in the UK) and docs I saw in Canada. I have also been prescribed Fybrogel twice, and when I told one doc that it made me feel worse they didn't believe me. It's with docs like this that I think it is safest to do your own research and use the 'guess and test' method to see what works for you. Just use them for prescriptions when you need them, hee hee.
It is a shame that all doctors can't be more aware, hopefully it will get better as IBS seems to just get more and more popular (you know what I mean!)
Good luck, hope the Acacia works for you!
