Can anyone recommend a brand of toothpaste that does not contain sorbitol? I did a search, but only found Arm and Hammer and that has saccharin and Tom's of Maine and that contains xylitol which is also suppose to be very bad for people with IBS. Tom's does make one without xylitol, but that one has no flouride.

Have you found that you're very sensitive to sorbitol? I'm only asking because I'm typically pretty sensitive to artificial sweeteners, but I've found that the amount in toothpaste and mouthwash doesn't bother me at all.

I'm not sure. I am so confused about this whole IBS junk that I am overly obsessed with everything that goes into my mouth. I can't figure out what helps and what hurts so I am desparate to eliminate anything "taboo" and I know sorbitol is suppose to be a big trigger. Maybe I'm getting myself so stressed over everything that the stress in itself is what is causing the symptoms and not the stupid food and ingredients!

I shouldn't laugh, but oh, how I know the feeling!! I was the same way at first. Take a deep breath... I know it's all confusing and overwhelming, but you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly, and it will all become second nature. Really.

And yes, stress will definitely affect your symptoms!!

I think you'll probably be fine with the toothpaste you're using right now. Because you don't ingest toothpaste, the amount of sorbitol you're getting from it is negligible.

I use a colgate one and it contains sorbitol but doesn't bother me.

Maybe there are "inactive" ingredients that aren't listed on the tube, but as far as I can tell, Crest Sensativity doesn't have any!

Augie,

I would not worry about the sorbitol in toothpaste. I , like Casey, use a toothpaste and mouthwash that both contain sorbitol. As long as you are not eating it straight out of the tube, you should be fine. Also, waiting about 30minutes before you eat or drink, will help limit the risk of sending any down to your tummy.

I do not think you will have much luck finding a toothpaste without an artifial sweetner. Toothpaste companies want people to buy their product, so it needs to taste good, and they can't use real sugar, because that would defeat the purpose of brushing your teeth. (plus it would make dentist very angry).

If you are really worried, then just use baking soda to brush your teeth. I used to work at a dentist office, and it is not really the toothpaste that is cleaning your teeth, it is the bristles or brushing motion. Maybe ask your dentist if he can get you a fluoride treatment product that contains no additives.
