It's been two years since I was diagnosed with IBS. My very last attack was after I had eaten a spaghetti dinner preceeded by a salad. That was right before I was diagnosed. I have been too scared to eat salad since. Is it safe for me to eat salad and if so what kind of dressing would be best? I'm tired of passing up the salad in restaurants.

Be very wary of salad! Some people on the boards can have small salads, while others (including myself) can't touch the stuff.

If you do try having a small salad, try to cut your vegetables as small as possible and chew very well. As for dressings, make sure it's as low fat as possible or maybe simply drizzle a little extra virgin olive oil on top.

And as always, make sure you have a ton of soluble fiber before the salad!

I agree with khyricat. The same thing happens to me with salads and greens!

I'm IBS C and can tolerate a small once once or twice a week, never two days in a row though! I always make sure I have lots of bread with it or some other soluble fiber food first. I go with a low fat italian dressing and just use a little.

Does it make you more constipated or give you intestinal cramps? I have IBS-C & used to eat a lot of salad. (I thought it would help the C, but I was still C.) Now that I'm on Heather's diet, I haven't had much at all.

It's hard to get out of that mind set that salad is so good for keeping things regular.

I can eat salad, if I have lots of bread with it, and a dressing that isn't too acidic... Also, if I have pasta with it and NOT too much sauce.

Judging from the responses, I think I'm going to stick with avoiding the whole salad thing. I love pasta salad though and thank god there is Wish Bone Fat Free Italian Dressing. It is the best for pasta salads.
