Hi everyone. I have been consuming myself lately with getting information on ibs because after ruling out Chrohns and Celiac and lactose intolerance - my daughter has been diagnosed with ibs. She is only 6 yrs old and this has NOT been fun at all.

I have been real careful as to what to give her this week because she had a real bad bout last saturday that wouldn't calm down and she has been missing alot of school lately.

I have not allowed her any juice but now she is dying for some. (once she feels better she seems to "forget" why she can't have certain things. Again, she is only 6 yrs old and right now she is calling me a "poopy head" because I wont give her any candy. So.....she loves orange juice. Is this one of the less evil culprits?? I am not really concerned with acid reflux at this moment, I am more concerned with the diarrhea. Can oj give diarrhea??

Also, since timing is everything, and this is Halloween weekend, are there certain candies that are worse than others? Any suggestions?? Her doctor said to stay away from hard candies and lollies and gum - things containing sucrose and such but he didn't say anything about chocolate. Is one worse than the other or does it depend on the person?

As far as regular foods - So far I know she can tolerate fried chicken cutlets and steak - we had both this week and she did fine. I cut out her pb&j on whole wheat and put it on potato bread and she has done fine on that too. Any other suggestions??? I am at a loss here. I feel like I am flying blind, and again, SHE IS ONLY 6 YRS OLD!!!!!

Welcome karenj~ How awful for your poor daughter! This must be so hard for both of you! Just remember, that things will get better, and that this diet calls for substitution, not deprivation.

Orange juice is a trigger for me (D) if I don't have anything in my stomach. If I've had a soluble fiber base, I can have a small glass of it. I'm not too big on juices, so hopefully some of the others can give you some more advice there. Just watch out for triggers like high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

You also need to watch out for HFCS and sorbitol in candy. My favorites right now are Nerds. Chocolate is a trigger for many people, especially milk chocolate. I can handle a few pieces myself, but everyone is different. If you can, check out the Recipe Boards for some yummy safe desert ideas you can make for your daughter on Halloween. This way, you can limit how much candy she eats and still let her have treats.

Did the doctor give or recommend anything to help with the diarrhea? Like immodium, or something else to stop/help with attacks?

Pasta and white rice are both staples, good when you feel like you can't eat anything. Have you checked out the diet information on Heather's main page? It's really helpful.

I know that there is a lot of information to sort through, but you and your daugter will get through this. Please feel free to come back anytime with questions, 'cause we love to help here.

Glad you found the community

Oh, gosh 6 years old would be a difficult age for IBS.

Try jelley beans, mints, gum drops and any other fat free candies. Also, I don't know why the doctor said to steer clear of hard candies and lollies, if you check the ingredients and there is no sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, or sorbitol (or some other artificial sweetner) then hard candies should be alright. Just read the ingredients on all the candies before giving them to her.

Maybe, one piece of chocolate, if she had a good soluble fiber meal, but I wouldn't even start her on chocolate, then she will just want it all the time. It is addictive and she might eat too much.

I would watch out on all juices, most contain not only high fructose corn syrup, but also citric acid, which upsets my stomach. Cranberry juice is the safest.

A good treat for her would be Rice Krispy treats. Be sure to buy the marshmellows that are high fructose corn syrup free, such as Kraft. They contain "corn syrup", but it is okay, it is not as concentrated as the high fructose corn syrup. Then you use the recipe on the Rice Krispies box, but use canola oil instead of butter. I think the recipe is like one bag of marshmellows, 3 Table spoons canola oil, and six cups of rice krispies. They taste just the same.

good luck, it is going to be very hard for her to understand, but if you start her early she can catch on.

My daughter got very bad c when she was a year old and that was the start of a wonderful roller coaster of emotional and physical pain, My pediatrician said it's just because she started a more solid diet and take her off milk and had to get used to it... when it still didn't go way he perscribed senicot.. when that didn't work he perscribed a higher dose... she was up to six teaspoons of senecot a day! A week after my son was born (she was only four) she spent three days in the bathroom screaming until my ped. said to take her to the emergancy room and that maybe we should see a specialist. (Maybe! I was ready to scream! Until then he seemed to think I was overreacting when I complained!)Well to make a long story short the gastro specialist was wonderful. he perscribed equilactrin and said to make sure that she moves her bowels once a day no matter what. My husband would read to her as she sat on the toilet every night and we gave her stickers on her reward chart whenever she went.(I know it sounds silly to reward BMs but she was SO YOUNG and this was SO HARD FOR HER. the rewards gave her a positive outlook on her bathroom episodes. The equilactrin worked and after about a year she was back to normal. She's 11 now and has only had one flare up since then. I hope this helps and I hope she feels better soon. Have a good weekend.

God 6 years old! And I thought being diagnosed at 16 was bad. Hang in there.

As for juices:

Cranberry juice is good as long as it doesn't contain High Fructose Corn Syrup, the only problem is that it can be somewhat tart, so I'm not sure if a six year old would like it. I can drink lemonade, once again watch out for HFCS.

As for sweets:

Rice Krispie Treats are great, just becareful with HFCS in both the marshmallows and the Rice Krispies. I have to use organic crispied rice cereal since the Rice Krispies where I live contain HFCS. I love Jolly-Ranchers and can sometimes get away with eating a few tootsie rolls. If you like to bake at all, there are some really good desserts in the recipe index.

Hope this helps.

No OJ! Does she like cranberry juice??

I do completely fine with candy, but some don't - you'll just have to try it out. No chocolate candy - but I can eat anything like jelly beans, laffy taffy, nerds, swedish fish, circus peanuts, sweet tarts, etc. Anything like that I can eat lots of and be fine. You'll have to see if HFCS is a problem with her.
I'm so sorry Poor girl.

Oh - I do fine with PB&J too - but no whole wheat bread. I just use white bread, and reduced fat PB. I eat that about everyday. And make sure the J isn't 'sugar free'.
Potatoes are great!

Good luck.

I am not an expert, but it is a trigger because it is such a concentrated sugar. I can't remember the ratio, but it is like 300 times sweeter than sugar. That is why so many manufacturer's use it in their products, it is so much cheaper, because they only have to add a little bit to get the same amount of sweetest that they would get with sugar.

And I can handle it in small amounts with no problem. Many of the animal cookies I eat have High Fructose Corn Syrup, but in such a small amount it is not a problem. My body can break down the fructose with no adverse effects.

You can usually see if there is a lot of high fructose corn syrup, by seeing where it is listed in the ingredients. They are supposed to list ingredients from most amount to least amount in the product.

Her doctor put her on this juice box like drink called Juice + Fiber. He told her to drink one a day and stay off all other juices. Well, she had her first 8 ounces (the amount of the box) the next day - in intervals but most of it at night and she had "the runs" ALL night long and part of the next day . It was horrible! I don't understand because I thought that fiber was needed for people that are constipated, not with diarrhea. But after reading on this board I looked at the box and it said "10 grams of soluble fiber" which is the good kind, right?

But anyway..it was too much for her. So doc said to give it to her in the morning so she isn't up at night, but hello - she has school! I had her down to 1 1/2 ozs in the am and another ounce in the afternoon - but to be honest, I still think it made things worse and I got so sick of seeing her in pain that I took her off of it. I don't know if this was right, I am waiting for doctor to call back with the results of her upper gi (even though the doc there said she was fine).

She has always liked chocolate milk and she has done fine with lactaid milk for the past couple of years with Trader Joes organic chocolate syrup - there is no hfcs in it. I have since last week taken that away too because I really had to limit her diet but am thinking of introcing it again to see how she does. Poor thing doesn't want to drink water 24/7 - she only likes cranberrry juice with oj in it, so there goes that one! uugghhh!
