I decided to make a dinner out of the event.
Tonight's dinner: baked ziti. I bought hubby a card and everything to celebrate my last dairy meal!
I could not have done this without all of you here on the boards. I'll keep ya posted....
Ok, time to throw the confetti....
One, two, three,
Bon Voyage!
Love, Ruchie

Congrats!! Just remember, there are plenty of substitutes available. You might not like them as much at first, but you get used to them and then it's fine. Are you switching to soy milk? Also I get rice cheese(for some reason it tastes better to me then soy cheese). Have you ever heard of nutritional yeast? It's this inactive yeast that has flavor, and you can make fake cheese with it.

I had mine a long time ago. First "allergy" I found out about. True story:
My mom had to take care of me when I had my wisdom teeth taken out. She fed me cream of mushroom soup cause of the pain pill stuff and she forgot I was lactose intolerant... Anyways, it didn't like being in my tummy long and I'm just glad it came out the top and not the bottom!

I am virtually dairy-free and have been for quite some time. For me the decision was a lot about being a singer... I really notice a lot less "gunk" in my throat when I haven't taken in any dairy. That's enough to make it worth while for me. And actually, I don't miss it much. I am not diametrically opposed to dairy or anything; I have the occasional yogurt and a little low-fat cheese, but like so many other dietary issues, I've found I can be really good at saying no if I remind myself of the consequence of eating X, Y, or Z. I guess I just prefer the long term result of feeling good to a little momentary oral gratification.

What I found that worked for me really well in getting used to the taste was that I didn't eat either dairy or the substitutes for quite a few months. Then when you start having the substitutes, you can't compare them so readily to the original dairy product. I think the reason so many 'normal' people don't like Soy Milk is because it tastes different than the real milk taste that they were expecting, not that they don't actaully like the taste.
