I am new here...would welcome advice

Long story short...IBS-C, pretty much in constat pain ranging from annoying but bareable (though my pain tolerence has gotten a bit high so my least pain now was prolly my middleish pain 3 months ago) to unable to function or move. Sometimes I go from one to the other in the same hour. I take it all: miralax, Robinul Forte, Librax, Zelnorm, Lexapro, Effixor, Levisin, Phenegran (those two on an as needed basis as the side effects are really bad) and Seraquel to put me to sleep. I have also been put on to birth control because of my unstable system and therefore have smashed any hope of childern in the near future. that was a big blow for us. I can no longer work and I am on a leave of absense. I have been in the emergency room 4 times in the last 2 weeks, one of those times led to a four day stay. I was given a perscription for Darvaset but I am sure you all know the vicious cycle of pain killers. Bloody hell. Anyway I am about to start the souble diet thing tomorrow, therefore cutting out my three favorite things in life, Mt. Dew, steak, and dairy... not to mention countless others. Any advice or words of encouragement would be welcome.

Wow, you are in a bad way, aren't you?

Words of advice:

1. Go cold turkey on the triggers. If you don't, it'll take you AGES to get rid of them.

2. Start on a SFS ASAP!

3. Get some of Heather's peppermint caps - she swears by them for pain.

4. Get herbal teas! Peppermint in general (unless you get heartburn), ginger for nausea (unless you get heartburn), chamomile for relaxing and helping with attacks and fennel for gas and bloating.

5. Only do the breaking the cycle diet for a couple of days as you're C. Then add in insolubles, but eat them the safe way - cook/puree and after SF.

Let's get you stabilised and then you can join the "trying for babies" thread on the "livingRoom" board!

I can't add anything to Linz's excellent advice, but I wanted to say hello and welcome to the boards. I agree with everything she's said, especially the part about quitting the trigger foods - ALL of them - cold turkey. It sounds horrible, but trust me, it's easier in the long run.

Oh, I did think of one thing to add... C takes a little longer to resolve than D, so don't panic if you don't feel better after a couple days on "what to eat when you can't eat anything". I'm an A, so I had that problem. (Not that I panicked, just that it took quite a while before I felt better.) Stick with it, and you WILL feel better. And feel free to vent about it here - we all know what it's like.

Linz's and Casey advice was great and I can't realy add anything right now!! Just wanted to say welcome!! Things will get better!!! It may take a little time but they will!!
I am sorry you are having such a rough time right now!! We are all here for you so ask anything you want or just vent your heart out!!! We understand!!!!

Sorry to hear you're feeling so crappy. I am also C and understand where you're coming from. I'm glad you found us, though; you'll get great advise and empathy here. The diet will help you out, even though giving up your favorite foods/beverages can be rough. I'm still having trouble with my biggest weakness, peanut butter, which is also a trigger for me. But, even so, we all feel better when we stick to will power. Be careful with the soluble fiber diet, though. We C'ers have to modify this diet with as many insolubles as we can tolerate so we don't get more constipated. For example: eat brown rice instead of white, oatmeal/grain breads, and eat potatoes with skin on. Work in veggies quickly, but start with them being cooked (low sodium veggie soup is wonderful, but be careful with beans especially lentils!). Remember not to eat only solubles for more than a day, work insolubles in quickly, drink plenty of water and herbal teas, take soluble fiber supplements starting with lowest dose and GRADUALLY increase, and get daily exercise. Ask us anything and vent.
