We're going to Israel. I'm very excited about the trip but I'm terrified about eating the food and drinking the water in a foriegn country. Does anyone have any advice?

hi there...i spent many years living in israel!!!
do not drink the tap water there!!! only bottled which is readily available. if you eat salad, make it yourself and wash it in bottled water, do not order salad in a restaurant (raw ones) because the water in israel is questionable (I was a water pollution scientist there so i know what i am talking about) and can contain bugs which will set off your ibs worse then anybody elses simple travel diarrhea!
Israel has amazing restaurants and if you go to the simple traditional ones, they always put pitta bread out on the table and rice is everywhere so enjoy it!!
where are you heading and for how long?

Thanks so much for the advice. Another friend of mine with IBS also reccomended that I bring individual containers of soy milk to use at breakfast time. Do you think that's necessary or can I get that there?
We're going for about a week and a half over Thanksgiving vacation. We'll be spending most of the time in Jerusalem, but I have relatives in Tel-aviv and Netania that we'll probably try to see while were there.
I haven't been ther since I was a teenager and that was pre-IBS so I could eat whatever I wanted.  The cheese there was amazing I think I'm really going to miss that! 
Where did you live when you were there?

I think I'm going to bring bags of rice cakes and crackers with me ust in case and just live on that, bread and bottled water while I'm there.

Israel has GREAT rice cakes, available in allll the supermarkets and loads of crackers too...(but some are quite fatty, check the nutritional info on the back...they have it in english too if you can't read hebrew)

All the Israeli supermarkets have soy milk so don't worry....and you are going to areas FULL of anglo people and they will be able to tell you where the health food shops are...you can find everything...even applesauce!!
I lived one year on a kibbutz in the STUNNING Jordan valley working as a date farmer, climbing palm trees. I then lived a year in Rehovot working on a water pollution research project for the government...and then I lived there for five months this summer (my husband and I married there in July)!! I love Israel. Its so beautiful!

Congratulations on your wedding. My parents met in Israel on Kibbutz Tzaad. I know some people think of Paris when they think of Romance, but to me Israel has to be the most romantic spot in the world! 
Thank you so much for your advice. Do you mind if I bug you with one more question?
We'll be staying in a hotel. Do you think I could ask the hotel beforehand to have soy milk on hand. (i know it sounds crazy but I HAVE TO have my bowl of cereal in the morning or I'm cranky for the rest of the day.

wellll it all depends on what kind of hotel you are staying in!! If it is a high grade then some of them even have soy at the breakfast buffet...but if not, most Israelis are very hospitable (once you get used to the way that they shout instead of speak in the middle east!!) and I am sure they won't mind...make sure you ask ahead though..and remind them!!!
