Questions about the definition of "red meat"

HI,
I am new here, but have been following the IBS diet book for almost a month (or at least I have been trying to)and I have a question about red meat.

Is the only reason to avoid the list of red meat due to the high fat content? What about red meat that is very low in fat, such as 99% fat free ham. I adore ham!!! Can I safely eat small quantities of it if I am careful to get only the low fat varieties? How about other "red" meats? I never really thought of pork chops as a red meat, but they are listed as one in the IBS recipe book.

Can someone help me out here?

Janice W.

Hi Janice! Welcome to the boards!

If I'm remembering correctly, the proteins in red meat are also a problem... if it's not the proteins, I'm not sure what it is, but in any event, red meats are harder to digest - for anyone, but especially IBSers.

I would steer clear of pork, especially. Just my own personal experience, I've had even "lean" pork trigger attacks. Have you ever tried the Jennie-O turkey hams? SO tasty!

Yup. Actually, I think they taste better than ham... I had a turkey ham back years ago, pre-IBS-diet, and I haven't eaten pork ham since... I like the turkey kind much better.

can't answer on ham, but the protein in meat was one I couldn't digest years ago- doubling over with cramps after a few bites... once it started trying to be processed... and I never ate pork- was raised in a Kosher household and afraid to as an adult after the problems with beef..

and it is great! it tasted just like ham.. I'm so glad you mentioned it because I LOVE ham.. and this is so simliar. I bought the Jennie-O chub of ham.. but since I cook for one I sliced it up and froze the leftovers.
