Hi everyone! I've been cruising this website for quite some time now and thought it was time to finally post something to say THANK YOU! Reading through Heather's site and these postings have helped me to understand IBS and to realize that I am not the only one with these awful symptoms.
About a year ago I started to have pains in the lower abdominal area that were so bad I had a hard time functioning. At first the doc's thought it was due to an ovarian cyst, but after a laproscopy which showed that the cyst had already dissolved, yet I was still having pain, I was referred to a Gastro specialist. After having all of the tests (colonoscopy, barium contrast, CT scan, lab work, etc.) and also being referred to one of the top medical centers in the country, the doc's finally determined that I had a particularly severe case of IBS. I've tried Zolnorm, many types of antispasmatic meds and different combinations of antidepressants for the pain; currently on Elavil and Trazadone. I'm also following Heather's diet and eat very little fat, no dairy, no coffee, no soda pop, lots of oatmeal and soluble fiber. I still am having quite a bit of pain and D on almost a daily basis, but it is particularly bad when I've eaten something that I shouldn't have the day before. Being able to look through this website and read through Heather's books (a couple of times each!)have been a lifesaver to me and gives me hope that things will get better someday.

Hi Karen-I am new to this site/board and read yours this evening...I suffer from a severe case of pain related IBD w/constipation & thought it rather strange that your doctor gave you Zelnorm for IBS-D, as Zelnorm is for IBS-C...what was he thinking? I, too, have been through all the antidepressents, anti-spasmotics and various other meds recommended for IBS, but to no avail. I havent tried Heather's diet fullforced yet, but am working on itt...I was a bit disappointed to read that you are doing the diet and still have the pain....ut oh-I am discouraged. Do you, or anyone else reading this, have any suggestions or words of advice for me?

Hi puddytat55 -I thought it was strange that my doc prescribed Zelnorm for IBS-D also, he thought that if it didn't make the D worse but helped the pain, it might work. Unfortunately, after a couple of days I could tell it was not going to work and stopped taking it. It is discouraging to go through each day with pain, isn't it? I just keep trying to find new ways to cope with it. but it's hard sometimes. Definately keep trying to follow Heather's diet. Even though I still have pain when I'm following it, it is much worse when I don't follow it.

We're glad you're here. Just a quick point - most people are super fine with oatmeal. I am not. It gives me D. Try a day without it and see if you notice a difference.

When I accepted that my diet had to change I stayed really consistent with the diet taking out red meat, caffeine, pop, dairy, and eating low fat. I also started a SFS. I am IBS-A though generally C. It took me a couple of months before I really noticed a huge difference in all of my symptoms. You just have to be patient and stick to it.

Hi there! I just wanted to pop in and say hello. This board is really great for both information and support. Any questions or ideas you have you can run by the people here and get some wonderful responses.

I'm an IBS-A, and not on the diet yet (no moo-lah) but I eat a lot of white rice and pasta and get my insolubles in when I can. Immodium is also good for D, if you can tolerate it.

Good luck to you - hope now that you've found the board (and wonder-woman, Heather) it'll help to get the D under control. Keep us updated!

I also wanted to say that, like Han, I'm rather dodgy with oatmeal.

Do you take Immodium?

Thanks for the kind welcomes and notes. I have tried Immodium but found that it gave me C, which was just as painful. I might try again at a lower dosage though. Also, will try some mornings without my oatmeal and see if that makes a difference.

How sweet!!!!! If you stick with Heather's diet you will start to feel better and possibly become stable like our famous LAURASUE. She has been stable for 9 months. We are all so happy and proud for her.

Hang in there and bring any questions that you might have to this board and you will be okay - promise!
