Hi, everyone! I have been lurking for a week or two, so I think it's time to say hello. I have had problems with constipation and diarrhoea for nearly 20 years now, but it used to be off and on, whereas now it is all the time - I haven't had a "normal" BM for several years. D always follows eating fruit/veg/beans etc, but if I don't eat stuff like that C gets quite bad - there is no happy medium! I have a lot of wind too. The most difficult thing is that even with C the motions are very soft and formless - like sludge - it makes them very difficult to pass. I feel exhausted afterwards and my legs ache for an hour or more. I haven't had an official diagnosis yet, still waiting for an appointment to see if I need tests to rule out other things, but my GP says it's probably IBS.
So, I know you are all experts here! Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? Is it IBS-C or IBS-A?
I used to get very severe headaches preceding a BM, sometimes to the point of passing out. I thought they were caused by eating nuts or seeds, so I followed a detox diet 3 years ago and they stopped, but the other problems continued. Also, I had a hysterectomy earlier this year, as the result of having a large fibroid (weighed 12 lbs). I really hoped the bowel problems would improve after that, but there isn't much change, maybe a little less bloating. It amazes me that removing something the size of a rugby ball didn't make more difference!
I have started taking Celuleve (same as Citrucell I think) and the wind has been a bit worse, but that might be coincidence. I read on another website that Citrucell makes motions softer so I'm not sure if it's a good idea for me. Would another SFS work differently or are they all the same? Can SFS make motions firmer or do I need to strengthen the muscles down there?
Also, I have started making some changes to my diet, cutting down on fat, cutting out tea, coffee and chocolate, drinking water regularly. Not sure how far I ought to go: should I try eating nothing but white bread, rice, potatoes, etc for a while or does that only apply to people with D? Is the restricted diet only for when you are having an attack? Actually, what does "attack" mean? As I have the same problem all the time, does that mean I am having attacks all the time or that I never have them?
Just so you know, after reading all your inspiring posts, I feel a lot more positive about tackling IBS now than ever before - I would have posted sooner, but every time I log on there is so much interesting stuff to read, it gets too late! So I hope you won't mind sharing some of your wisdom with me.
Thanks in advance,
Josephine

Hi Josephine!
I'm pretty new at this stuff too, but I'll try to answer what questions I can.
If you're switching back and forth from C to D, I would say it's A (sounds like a confused ABC game ). I'm an A, mostly C but the D is what bugs me most. Sometimes my C is soft too, but not all of the time. I don't know what to do about that
You would think that removing the fibroid would help, but surgery can be pretty traumatic on the system too.
Some people on the board have mentioned different symptoms with different SFS; some can only tolerate particular brands. I can't say from personal exp, 'cause it's too expensive for me right now.
It's great that you are making changes to your diet! Hopefully you will see some improvements! The "what to eat when you can't eat anything" diet is really only supposed to be for a couple of days. It's really important to get as balanced a diet as possible with your IBS.
Attacks are another thing that vary from person to person. I usually don't consider my C side to be an attack, unless I'm in a lot of pain from it. I'm just C or I have an attack of D, and that's usually however long the D and pain last.
I hope this all helps; I'm sure some of the others will be able to give you better/more detailed info. You can also search through past posts for info.
Please be sure to let us know when you get an official diagnosis. Hope it's not IBS, but I hope more that it's nothing more serious! Again, glad you found us!

welcome...
definitely have tests run to rule out IBD, etc.. but it sounds like IBS A to me.. and much like me... a few suggestions- stool is still soft with SFS, but its more solid, so it comes out as one big mass.. and I find myself having more regular bowel movements- before it would either be racing to the potty multiple times a day or not going at all for ages and then issues getting out the soft or firm stuff..
now I basically go daily and even at the same time so I can schedule my day around when I'm going to feel the urge and need the can, but its not a race anymore either.. unless I do soemthing else really wrong.. I found the biggest helps were cutting out dairy (already didn't do red meat) and going on an SFS.. I was already low fat before this... it has made a huge difference.. but I do find I tend to swing D still if I overdo on Insoluble Fiber.. so I tend to make sure its well cooked and try to get my veggies in other ways as well- V-8 or fat free refried beans with tomato/salsa in them seems ok with me
good luck- we all have individual triggers, so its test.. one idea- what I did to start was to go on a diet of plain chicken/fish and soluble fiber foods and applesauce and bananas for 2 days then add one food item a day because triggers tend to take less then 24 hours to be noticed by me, some people its longer so you need to add slower, until I was up to a more normal diet.. now I add things when I want but only one at a time, and enjoy life as a whole....
Also one thing that has made a huge difference in how I feel overall is eating 6 times a day, smaller amounts.. even if its just a luna bar or something.
I don't feel deprived, but I let myself have occasional treats too- a single little dark chocolate from my favorite chocolatier after my later dinner once every few weeks, some of the amazing desserts from heathers books and this board... etc..

Thanks Amber! Your reply helps a lot - I was wondering if I was supposed to stick to bread and rice till I was all normal again, so you may have saved me from coming down with a bad case of scurvy. I'm glad I found you too, because before I did I was reading stuff on another IBS website that recommends raw vegetables and lots of yogurt, which I really wasn't looking forward to!

Hi, Amie! What you say about SFS is very encouraging. I have been taking Celuleve just a week now and have increased dose to 2 tabs x4 and I think I am noticing an improvement - almost scared to write that! - maybe it's coincidence but there is a slight change, so I will continue hopefully.
Your suggestion for a diet plan is good, I think I could handle it and next week will be a good time to try because my family are away and I can plan meals just to suit myself. So thanks for your help!

Josephine, I just wanted to say hello and welcome!! I second what Amber and Amie said, they gave you some great answers and suggestions. I would just add that the three golden rules for managing IBS-C are:
1. You MUST get enough insolubes but only in an IBS safe way, pureed like berries in a smoothie, or cut small and cooked well like veggies in soup. Heather's quick breads are also an excellent way to get them.
2. You MUST drink enough water. This is even more important for C'ers than D'ers.
3. You MUST get some exercise like walking, to keep the gut moving properly.
Really nice to have you aboard. Keep coming back!

Ah ... exercise ... I knew there was something else I had to do, apart from cooking and eating all those delicious recipes! Well, the good thing is that I do so little exercise, even a little increase will be a big improvement. I've been drinking plenty of water since I started SFS and I'm going to follow the diet strictly next week - I've got a better idea what I'm aiming for now, thanks to everyone's suggestions.
Thanks for your welcome, LauraSue, I really am so glad to have found this website!
