I'm wondering if the Flu vaccination will be a big problem for my IBS?

I work at a hospital, and it is mandatory that I take the shot.

All comments are welcomed. Actually, i'm scared. I have been stable for a while now and all the old fears are creeping back into my brain.

Funny you bring that up. I just came back from the doctor and I asked the same question. He said no, it shouldn't, he hasn't heard anything like that. I haven't had any problems with it, and I get them every year. Lets cross our fingers!

I have no idea if flu shots affect IBS but I AM GETTING ONE DEFINITELY because the flu gives me IBS!!!!

Also, this is really cool, flu shots are free to all residents of Ontario!

Just a quick note, I know there are several of us trying to get pregnant. Anyone who is pregnant or plans on becomming pregnant and the people who live with you should also get flu shots!!

Hi Lene,

I got a flu shot last year and it didn't bother my tummy at all. My arm was a little sore, though. We were scheduled to take them where my hubby works yesterday, but at the last minute they said there was a shortage and were only giving it to people over 65 that were high risk.

Good luck

Thanks to everyone that responded. I was afraid the nonorganic egg in the medication would cause some problems.

I asked the same thing. The dr. aid it won't. It is just encased in an egg. He said it has nothing to do with dairy, it would bother you if you had an actual allery to eggs, or chicken.

I get one every year. I am worried about my grandchildren, two of them are asthmatic and they are young. I would gladly give up my shot for one of them, I have had the flu so many times, and I have been very sick with it. I just would hate to not be able to get a shot. They pulled this shot shortage cr@p with us last year. As a matter of fact, I think they do it every year. Whats up with that? IF you can, go get one!!!

I can get one at my Allergy Dr., but he charges $25., I may go ahead and pay it, it would be a lot cheaper to pay for it now, than to get the flu later.

Well, I just came from teh dr this am and asked about the flu shot. I guess one of the main manufactors messed up an entire batch and it was recalled. The dr said there was a big story about it on the news just in the last day or so but I missed it! So, this year there will be 50% less flu shots available than last year! Its going to be a terrible year for the flu! I am trying to get pregnant and called me OBGYN to ask about it but they are out to lunch right now.

I heard about it too. The batch was tainted in the lab in England, and recalled. I called my doc today, and he's all out. He used up the last batches this morning, and he's not expecting any more. Guess we'll all have to suffer together! I don't know anyone who managed to get one this year.

Thank all of you for responding. There is a shortage of the vaccine this year and they will not be giving it to everyone. If I did now work in a medical facility, I would gladly pay to get one as I am sure the flu and IBS would just be too much for me to take on.

Thanks

Those of you that are in the states can get them at any Walgreens. You would need to contact the store for further information.

Good Luck!

I can't get a Flu shot this year because I keep having really bad reactions to them. My arm swells up and gets so stiff that I can't even move it. I guess I'm just gonna have to suffer through the flu this year.

Meg, you may be allergic to the thimerosol they use as a preservative. I am, so my allergist divides the shot into three portions over a couple weeks to make sure I don't react. With my fibro and my DH's asthma we're hoping to qualify for the shots this year. I thought about being a good Samaritan and not getting one because other people needed it more. Then I thought about how with my fibro I'd feel three times worse (due to three times the normal level of pain transmitters) than a normal person with the flu and decided I qualify!! I'm going to ask my doctor on Friday when I see him. I better start a list!

I became a believer in flu shots after two things happened. About 15 years ago I got the flu so bad I couldn't raise my head off the pillow for a whole week. Then I read that not only does it prevent the flu strain it's designed for, if you catch a slightly different flu it makes it a milder version than if you didn't get a shot.

So anyone who qualifies, make SURE you get one!!

I am sorry that Walgreens has raise the age limit, a few weeks ago they were giving them to EVERYONE!

We have been notified here at UCSf that there is a shortage and some people will not be getting one this year. I do not inted to be one of these people.

Although I am not 65 years old, I am prone to respiratory infections during cold and flu season.

I think without the shot, by body will suffer severely and I am going to get it.

I hope something comes through for you as well.

I called 2 Walgreens by my house today in Metro Detroit and neither of them had any flu shots!!! There was a clinic offering them this weekend but the traffic into the clinic was so bad the police shut it down! So I'm still searching for my flu shot!

Sorry to hear that Michele. I guess this shortage has limited the number of shots that may be given.

Keep searching!

You are way, way, WAY more likely to die of the flu than to die of a contaminated vaccine.

Rachel, I was really afraid of needles and shots until a couple years ago. I'd been known to even faint. Then I was going to an allergist for scratch tests prior to getting allergy shots regularly. I told him and his nurse about my problem and he said very kindly but very humorously, "Laura, NO ONE likes needles. If they did they'd be masochists!!" I laughed and I've been fine ever since! Well, I do have to breathe deep and sometimes lie down first, but nothing like before!

Becky, I'm with you! NO THANK YOU! I've heard way too many stories of people who got SO sick after the shot that I'm not willing to even test it! I had the flu once or twice. It's not fun but why risk getting the shot then getting the flu from the shot. I think everyone that is supposed to get it should. Healthcare workers, babies, elderly, pregnant people (however, both times I was pregnant I didn't get one!) My mom tried it twice. She reacted for 1 or two days with bad flu symptoms and is still not willing to try it again. It's funny how controversial this sort of thing is. I say just let your body fight it the natural way. The people who have died of the flu had underlying other problems and I think were mainly elderly. Ok, so I guess when I'm 65, hey what the heck maybe I'll have a different outlook but until then, cross fingers in the sign of the cross as to scare away vampires but instead it's at the flu shot!

Which one is that??? I went to an allergist a while back. They did 2 different kinds of tests... the one on your back, and one where they actually inject the syrum (sp?) into the first couple layers of skin. I was bawling by the 3rd or 4th one. I amazingly made it through 9 of the 12 before I told them I couldn't go through anymore. I actually left in tears because it hurt so bad.

I'm ok when getting my blood taken out of my arm, and usually do fine with IV's, but not shots. I just have a really hard time knowing something foreign is being injected into my body, and they do have a tendency to hurt (especially tetnus which I'm due for next year ).

Rachel, it was the one with a bunch of pinpricks down your arm. You may have a lower pain threshold. Now that I have fibromyalgia, any needle is EXCRUCIATING! Fibro people have three times the normal level of a pain neurotransmitter, which means it hurts three times more!

I've shared a couple of my fibro needle stories here, like the one when I yelped so loud I think the lady decided to find another career!! Then there was the time I was crying and sobbing so loud when having a breast cyst aspirated that I think half the people in the waiting room fled in terror!

I'm looking into a topical anesthetic called LMX that pediatricians use for kids. Hey, if it works for kids, that sounds about right for this big baby!!

So I hear you on the pain issue!
