This is a bit of a philosophical question but I was wondering how many folks have seen the movie the Ladykillers starring Tom Hanks and what people thought of the portrayal of an IBS sufferer (the Mr. Pancake character). I don't know that I have ever seen another screen character with this illness.

Personally, I thought it was funny but then I love Coen brothers movies and they are a bit on the offbeat side (remember Fargo??????).

And it certainly gave my husband an idea of the sense of urgency I feel when I have to go.

I am with you on Ben Stiller. Although we did enjoy Starsky and Hutch for nostalgic reasons.

I haven't seen either one of those movies (Lady killers or Along Came Polly), but now that I know they have IBSers in it, I might consider it. And I do like Tom Hanks and Ben Stiller.

However, I probably won't like it if they are using our illness as a joke. I was watching "Blue Collar Comedy" the other day, and they had an IBS joke and I got really angry and was yelling at the T.V.

If they had our "problem" they wouldn't be joking about it. Because I don't think it is funny, because it effects my whole life and the decisions I make every day of my life.

Sorry if I sound angry.......i guess we should be able to laugh at ourselves, but I just don't think anyone deserves IBS and I don't think "normal" people realize how horrible it really is. I mean people don't make fun of diabetes or any other chronic disorders.

But maybe I will check out movies anyway, just to see how they use IBS.

I haven't seen the Ladykillers, but I think I may check that out. As an aside, I *love* Fargo.

I'll check back in once I've seen it.

My favorite Coen brothers movie is O Brother Where Art Thou. My husband, oldest son and I can all recite much of the dialogue from memory. Those guys sure know how to make a movie.

You probably won't like the Ladykillers then.

I LOVE (!!) "O Brother Where Art Thou"!!

I haven't seen the Lady Killers, but my b/f said the jokes about IBS were crude (by my prude-ish standards ), so I'm not really interested in it.

But "OBWAT" was IMHO George Clooney's best role - he stepped WAY out of character from ER ...

I'll wathc them, but I tend to agree.. I know I didn't like the episode of Dead Like Me that featured a man applying for a job who used IBS as a reason for having extreme flatulence DURING the interview and a lot of BO (he was extremely overweight and that was the only symptom they mentioned)... I too felt they were making fun of a serious ailment.

Well I quite liked the movie and the character with IBS. The way I see it, having what we have sucks, sometimes you really just do have to laugh at it. I know that if I were in a high stress situation like robbing a casino (which I wouldn't do btw) my gut would react the sameway. My roommates watched it with me and had a good (not mean) laugh with the character and the similarities to me, especially after his "Wow, I feel 30 lbs lighter comment"

Whereas the character in Along came Polly was able to hold it for a really long time.... I don't think so!

Love O Brother Where Art Thou. Have the soundtrack album. Fargo was also priceless, but have you ever seen Raising Arizona??? I was falling on the floor laughing and Andy was trying to pretend he didn't know me!

Well I know what I am going to be doing this weekend, renting some movies! I too loved OBWAT, loved it so much bought it and the cd for it, my husband go so tired of it! I think we all need to have a little humor about this, I mean if we walked around upset about it all the time wouldn't that lead to more flare ups?? Just a thought...

I have had bad luck with Raising Arizona -- we always seem to put it on on a night when I am wiped and I have never seen it all the way through. It's one of my husband's faves though.

My husband, my 15 year old son and I recite the I thought you was a toad scene regularly!

You gotta laugh, it helps with the stress.
