It lasts quite a while in a fridge - alot longer than dairy milk. When it goes bad it goes all lumpy and a bit smelly and tastes acidic - it's usually pretty obvious!
I buy the one in the box that doesn't need to be refrigerated until it is open. On the back of the container it says to throw it out after ten days, after it is opened. If it is not refrigerated or opened it can last a few months (most should have a date on the back).

I usually buy the ones that have expiration date already on the container, that way I don't have to worry about it going bad. I have never had it go bad before the date...
