Hi all, I tried for a week to take 10mg of amitriptylin ( I even tried to cut it in half for the past three nights) but it makes me stay awake!!! I know it's supposed to put me to sleep but I have always had super-sensitivity to medicine.
Any suggestions for a differnet one that is ok for IBS/D? Judy

Do you have to take it at night? Any chance of taking it in the morning instead, when a little sleeplessness wouldn't be such a bad thing?

Have you tried calling your doctor about it yet? He/she may want you to keep using it for the time being... side effects from antidepressants typically wear off in a couple weeks. I know my doctor wanted me on lexapro for a month, regardless, before we even entertained the possibility of switching to something else.

Hi Judy,
I agree with Casey, Judy. I'd call your doc and let him know you're having trouble sleeping and see what he wants to do. My GI started me on it (amitriptyline) a couple of weeks ago and told me that in some cases it can cause sleeplessness (said he tried it one time for back pain and it kept him awake, so he had to quit) so, what you're experiencing sounds like a possible
side affect. But before dropping them, call your doc.

I take citalopram 20mg and it seems to be working for me- best bet its to discuss with your Dr and take his advice.
