Somewhat good news!

I went to my family doctor tonight and asked to be put on an anti-depressant as I've been having a REALLY tough time lately. He prescribed Celexa and I will start it tomorrow morning. It is supposed to help with the IBS too but I'm not holding my breath.
I told my doctor about the horrible GI specialist and I don't think they're allowed to say aything bad because he really bit his tongue. He didn't looked please at all and kept telling me how sorry he was that I had such a rough experience with him.
I also asked about whether or not he thought I could have Crohns (as the GI doc eluded to). The friggin JERK GI told me that but in his report to my doctor said that he wants more testing done to rule it out! He led me believe that I was in the earlt stages of it.  My good doc said it sounded very unlikely because I am lacking a few of the main symptoms and he does not suspect it...but he wants me to have a colonsocopy soon to be sure. He's going to refer me to a new GI for this of course. I was so upset when I told him about my appt. that I actually started crying. I usually try to hold it together a bit better but couldn't hold it in. 
Anyhow, I guess this has been some progress and I am hopeful that things will fall into place once day. I can't give up yet. Thank god for good, empathetic, kind doctors because I really like mine a lot.

I'm SO glad you have a good family doctor... it still doesn't quite make up for the jerk GI, but at least you can trust ONE of your doctors! I'm glad you're getting a referral elsewhere. Good news indeed. 
And I hope the Celexa works for ya!

That's funny that you wrote back because I was just reading that you started your anti-depressants too. That's too bad that it's hitting you so hard. Mine might do that too. Stick with it though because your body will get used to it and it might make a huge difference!
Ya, my doctor's a sweetie. He's just out of school so he's all eager to do some good in this world and isn't jaded and apathetic like big old JERK GI quack.

What is it with Ontario GI specialists? Mine was a total jerk too. When he does colonoscopies, he doesn't put you all the way out! I had heard this from a friend and was prepared but it was awful. I felt everything, including when the scope went around corners in my gut. I cannot believe that they don't put you out here. I am being treated by my family dr for now and he's great.
I think the antidepressant will help but if it doesn't try another one. I tried Zoloft first, then Serzone (now off the market), and then finally Effexor, which really did the trick. I still have lots of anxiety but at least I can function.

I asked him about the sedation and he said "Of course they sedate you and you shouldn't feel a thing". I think some GI's don't use that at all! The JERK GI kept telling me how extremely painful it would be - well ya, if you don't give your patients anything, then yes it will hurt a lot.
I will not get it done without sedation. Too bad.

Hi,
I glad that you are finally getting some quality care. No thanks to that Jerk GI.
Hubby takes Celexa because of a bout of depression after his heart bypass surgery. He doesn't have IBS but it has really helped him have a happy outlook. Hope it works for you, too.

Isn't it amazing how a little bit of good news gives us hope and a new outlook on the same old problems??? I am soooooo glad you have a good doc. Hang on to him and sure hope the Celexa works for you. Rooting for you!

and I gained alot of weight. I now take Prozac weekly and nortriptine and knock on wood I haven't gained! It did help with my depression and I had a better out look, but my husband told me I was more or less a flat line when it came to emotions. I just wanted to let you know my experience with the drug, it may not be the same for you everyone has different experiences with drugs. Good luck with the drug hope you have better times soon!

Congratulations! You didn't give up when you received poor medical treatment and you are still working to help your IBS! Let me know how the Celexa works. I am the one starting Zoloft this weekend and I would love to hear back from you on how your anti depressant is working!! It's great to know that we are starting this at the same time and I would love to know how it works for you. Good luck!! Let us know how it goes and I will update you myself!!!!!

Well that's great! And good for you for asking for the ad's. At least they'll help you stay on top of things.
See...knew he couldn't tell without a colonoscopy! You get that done and I bet it comes out fine.
Never mind about crying! If all the doctors were nice, we wouldn't have such a hard time of it! Been there, done that.

Thanks. He put me on a low dose 20 mg if that makes a difference. How much weight did you gain? I can stand to gain 10-15 lbs so if it's something like that I'm ok. But if it's way more I might consider not staying on it for a long time.
