what causes tight clothing like jeans to cause attacks? What does it actually do to your body to cause one? It doesnt make sense to me but I know it can happen! I put some jeans on for the first time in a long time last night and within an hour or so I was feelin like crap! Just curious??

I can't tolerate any tight clothes around my waist. I usually wear pants that have elastic waistbands (soft elastic). Usually I wear knit pants that are very soft and comfy. I haven't worn jeans in years.
I think the problem is that something tight around the stomach area is pressing on everything inside.....we surely don't need that with everything else that's going on inside already. After eating, something tight would really cause trouble, I would think.

I'm guessing it's probably the pressure around the waist, like Barbie said. I can't figure out why else it would do that. I've noticed it a little... I'm fine with low-rise jeans, even tight ones, but if I put on a vintage dress and it's tight *right* at my waist, I feel pretty crappy within minutes. Darn uncooperative bodies!

Isn't great the clothing industry invented hip huggers and low rise jeans. I hear you about tight jeans - I don't wear pants around my waist anymore. I love hip huggers and I'm too old for low rise. My boys don't need to see me walking around their school wearing low rise with my stomach showing.

I totally agree. I only wear low cut jeans, undies, trousers, etc. cos the regular ones cause attacks. This was the first trigger I noticed at age 12, too, btw!
I recently posted about night attacks in this regard! I cut down on night attacks by stripping from the waist down when I sleep. I found that my pajama bottoms were actually CAUSING attacks at night. This really worked for me, fyi for people who suffer night attacks.
All my best,

I second the tightness at the waist- I have been a lot worse in pants then other things... its why I wear waistfree dresses all the time.. works well for work, and looks nice without worrying about being tight...

Luckily I already did this. I have never been able to sleep with pants- except cold camping. But it is funny that someone else feels this way.

Does anyone actually get a full attack with D and everything from wearing them?? Or is it just more uncomfortable? I think Im going to stay away from jeans for awhile - Ill just have to do some shopping! Thanks for the replies!

I just find it's more uncomfortable, personally. I can't have anything constricting from about 2" above my navel to about 1" below it... the pressure just feels awful.
Incidentally, 99% of the time, I wear "yoga pants" or something similar. I wear jeans once or twice a week, maybe, and I usually change out of them as soon as I get home - even though I'm cool with the low-rise ones, it's just way more comfortable to be in something with stretch.

Before I had even heard of IBS, I knew something was terribly wrong with me when I almost passed out from the pain caused by the bridesmaid dress I was wearing in my best friend's wedding. It was tight around the waist but not too small on me, but WOW did it hurt like crazy. The pain went all the way up my back and around my body -- really the worst pain attack I've ever had, I think. I couldn't eat or dance at the wedding, and made several trips to the bathroom trying to relieve myself, but I could only tinkle. It was horrible. I had my friend unzip my dress in the cab ride home and walked through the Hilton with my dress unzipped and my shawl wrapped around me. We got up to our hotel room and found the key card didn't work. I literally slid down the door, collapsed on the floor, and started bawling. Thankfully my friend went down and got a new key. I couldn't even wash my face that night or take out the 2348098234 bobby pins. I slipped out of the dress and passed out. My whole abdomen ached for a good 2 days. I know now that it was caused by the tight dress, the fried appetizers, and all the champage. So yes ... long answer to your short question ... I do get pain from tight-waisted things. Like the other girls on this board I mostly wear very low rise jeans (sometimes too low -- have you ever tried to sit on a barstool with low jeans and a normal length shirt? It's IMPOSSIBLE not to flash some butt cleavage!). Anything around my waist for too long makes me achy, but I rarely get D anymore since being on the diet. I also think that's probably why my tummy often hurts in church -- I usually wear waist-height skirts and in the winter, pantyhose. Perhaps I need to look into dresses and knee-highs! Anyway sorry for the rant. I was a bad girl tonight and had a big slice of pizza -- cross your fingers that I make it through the night without D! Hope you feel better soon, Panda

I used to wear really tight jeans....*years ago, not telling how many* . I stopped wearing them because I would get horrible trapped gas and I could feel it moving around in my intestines. AND IT HURT REALLY BAD. Past those days...all my pants have to have stretch.. see, you aren't the only one!

I seriously thought I was the only one....jeans hurt me like crazy. I get the worst stomach aches! I hardly ever wear them, and if I do, I change the MINUTE I get home. My husband thinks I'm crazy because he thinks jeans are the most comfortable thing in the world! I'm showing him this post definately.
I usually wear dressier pants, or 'yoga pants' like casey said. The worst is when you go somewhere and a someone says, 'why are you so dressed up?' 'OH BECAUSE JEANS GIVE ME DIRRAHEA'. Maybe I'll just say that next time and see the reaction lol.

I thought I was the only one. I have been avoiding tight jeans for that reason, I buy the low cut soft denium jeans. When the sit below my stomach I find this helps a lot too, there isn't any presure on my stomach, so now I fell fine when I wear jeans.

I can't wear tight clothing either. Even tight underwear causes problems. Usually I can tell right away if what I am wearing is too tight. The pains start. If I continue to wear it, then it can go into a full blown attack with d. (BTW, I don't try to do that anymore. ) I can't even wear elastic pants unless they fit loosely. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. Misery loves company?

i'm a guy -- so i don;t have issues with tight jeans -- eventhough I think i can pull them off! My belt or jeans will cause an issue at times -- especially when i sit for a time...just puts pressure on the wrong area of my stomach and i feel an amazing pressure -- it is a combination of the pressure and i also think it prevents a nice smooth flow in your stomach .... good luck! my hipster jeans are fantastic, though you do have to watch the bum cleavage! I can't wear anything that remotely tightens my waist. I am always wondering what the hell women with ibs did in the days of corsets...i think one would kill me!!! my wedding dress was empire line 2 months ago so I would feel free to be me (also gives you beautiful boobs!!)... its so cool that it does the same thing to all of us...I wonder why physically????

No clue what causes it, but YES this happens to me! This has happened to me since I was a little girl and I thought it was because I was fat! When I lost 60lbs, I wanted to wear "cute" clothes and noticed that I had lots of problems again. I am reverting back to elastic, loose waist bands. It sucks, I wish I could wear sweats 24/7. Pantyhose are a killer every time too. I pretty much don't eat when I wear them.

Do you all ever have discomfort with the lap part of the seatbelt? I commute 45 minutes to work every day and every morning, which is my worst time, I'm constantly pulling the lap belt away from my stomach.
Wow, it's so amazing to discover people who feel the same way. I wear loose skirts most of the time. I rarely wear jeans or pantyhose - I'm not sure they actually CAUSE an attack for me, but if I eat and get full, it's so uncomfortable and that just makes things worse.

I have trouble with seat belts also. If you put a clothespin on the belt at the top of the belt where it goes into the car, then it will stay where you adjust it. I have been told if you have an accident, the clothespin will snap off and the belt will work as usual. Also when I am not driving, I use a sheepskin barrier that wraps around the belt staying in place with velcro. The clothespin works better for driving. Hope that helps.

My seat belt used to cause my belly SO much pain! I finally took a large safety pin and just pinned the safety pin into the seatbelt so it couldn't pull so tight on my tummy! I can't tell you what a difference it has made on my 30 minute commute! The shoulder harness isn't affected at all and its not so loose that I will endager myself if I get in an accident!

Pantyhose are the WORST! I've actually slit the front completely in order to tolerate wearing them. But I do hate seatbelts too. There's nothing worse than going to a meeting in a co-worker's car and constantly fiddling with the lapbelt and a/c to keep from passing out from the pain!!!

Tight clothes around the stomach definitely do not work with IBS. It reminded me of many years ago before panty hose came into existance. I went to work with a panty girdle which held up my stockings. I was in such agony I took the scissors from my desk, slipped them into my handbag and went into the ladies room and cut off the entire top of the panty girdle. After that I always cut off the front panel of all my new panty girdles as soon as I bought them. To this day I still can not wear anything that is even slightly snug at the waist. But only a person with IBS can understand how desparate you can get from tight clothing. You are not alone.

Yeah! You know what's weird is that even before my IBS started, I could never wear tight/form fitting jeans cause it would give me stomach aches. I guess my gut was sensitive already in that respect? All through high school I wore baggy jeans cause of this (before low rise was popular).
