I'm still afarid of the procedure.
I heard from a co-worker that her sister had it and wasn't sedated AT ALL so it was very, very painful. Now I'm worrying that in Canada they don't sedate their patients. Does anyone from Canada know if this is true? Thanks.

PROBABLY you will go in there the day before and they give you the prep stuff and talk you to about the procedure. Ask them then about the sedation part. If they told me they were doing it with no sedation I'd just tell them they weren't going to see me in there, period.
I went in the day before, met with the nurse, got the stuff, got a couple sheets of info that answered a lot of questions, and sat with the nurse asking questions (and getting them answered) for a long time. Likely you will do this too, eh?
Put your mind at ease about the procedure --- call them today and ASK about sedation. Tell them you're not doing it without it and that should take care of it.

Kelly,
Oh, I WILL NOT be having it done if there's no sedation! I don't care if they find gold in there, there's no way!
I called my doctor and left a message about wanting to see a new doctor and he wants me to come in next week. Maybe he'll know.

Hey,
I had a colonoscopy done in London a few months ago and I had lots of sedation. I too know of people who have had it without, I think it really depends on the doctor. For example, you don't want a doctor suggesting they can do it in their office(!), you want it done in the hospital in an endoscopy unit.
I don't think it's a Canadian thing though, just ask ahead and make sure they're willing to give you the sedation...if they're not, keep looking for a new doc!
Good luck, Kelly

I have one done today. It is not bad on a 1 to 10 I would say that it is a 6 to 7. The drink that you have to take before the colomoscopy is the worst. I went today for my 2nd one, the first time it did not go well, I did not drink enough of the meds. before I went. Today was good they gave me pills instead of the drink. Today was good the give you so many meds, when you get to the hospital you do not feel a thing.

Oh, that's so good to hear. I think that I will 'only' get it done if it's with sedation. That jerk doc I had a consultation with obviously doesn't use sedation if he was telling me over and over again that it's extremely painful (that's all in another post).
Thanks, I feel a bit better. And yes, it would have to be in a hospital or a something like that.

I am going to have colonoscopy on Wednesday. Both my family doctor and specialist doing test advised that it is under medication. It is the standard here in Brantford, Ontario anyway but my understanding is standard throughout Ontario anyway and if you do a search on Google it appears to be the same everywhere.
They are talking in the States about doing it without medication in some hospitals because of the cost I presume. I had one friend who did have it without medication because he suffers from a sleeping sickness and was afraid to take sedative. He said it was uncomfortable but liveable.
