New to this - background and questions
      09/10/05 12:43 PM

I have IBS-D. I've had it for years, probably at least since my early 20's and just referred to it as a nervous stomach. At the time, it seemed to be more stress induced. I was diagnosed probably 10 years ago and have been taking prescription medication and did relatively okay until recently, when it became chronic. My current Dr. changed my meds and that seemed to help, UNTIL, we were on a cruise and right at the beginning of a land excursion, "IT" hit and with a vengeance. There I was looking at the long gang ramp of the ship and a distant restroom sign. I ran, like OJ Simpson running through the airport…it was like I was moving in slow motion. I didn’t make it in time. Luckily, I have a wonderful husband that came to my rescue and after several cell phone conversations between the two of us and his assistance, I was able to re-board the ship.

Prior to that, I had gone to my Dr., who says she too suffers from IBS, seeking help. I asked her about probiotics, because upon return from my cruise, I had begun to search on the internet for help. She said she didn’t know about it, but try anything that works…ugh. I actually keep acidophilus in my refrigerator for when I have to take antibiotics. I had no clue it could be taken daily on a regular basis. I also read about “Questran”, which I’ve taken for years for my cholesterol. Little did I know that I had things within reach that would help me.

I continued to read on the internet where I found Heather’s book, “Eating for I.B.S.”. I ordered it immediately. I’ve read it cover to cover and re-read or refer frequently back to the first part of the book. I’ve underlined, circled and made notes in the margins. Obviously, being from the south, I was raised on fatty foods and dishes. Even the word “soy” made me cringe. That book, CHANGED my way of thinking about food, and will be instrumental in changing my life! I’ve shopped and shopped for the spices and the various items recommended. I’ve even cooked several of the recipes…something I’ve not done much of since my daughter moved out to go to college. I work long hours and don’t get home until anywhere between 6:30 and 7:30 or later on week nights. Those hours are not very conducive to cooking a healthy meal. I am however, determined to gain control over the IBS and being able to live a normal life, without fear. The “without fear” part will take me awhile, I‘m afraid.

I’ve incorporated the Calcium and trying the peppermint “Altoids”. I’m struggling a bit with the mint tea. I love rice, so that’s a good thing. I’m also taking digestion Enzymes.

Sorry for the long intro, but here are my questions. I’m sure I will have more.

1. The book says to drink the minimum amount of liquids with meals. (I’d heard that already) My problem is, the “Questran” says to drink with meals and not drink it fast. I have reduced the amount of liquid I mix it in and I’ve tried drinking it right before my meal. I want it to be effective for both the cholesterol and IBS. Does anyone know what/when is the best way to drink it?

2. The book says to take “Citrucel” (that’s the one I’m using) daily. I know it’s a soluble fiber, but does that mean drink it once a day or up to three times a day? I’ve started with once a day. I know I need the fiber, but I’m still afraid that it will cause diarrhea (the "fear" factor). Also, when is the best time to drink it; on an empty stomach or right before a meal?

3. Any thoughts on drinking Aloe?

4. If I follow the eating plan of no/low fat, no dairy and continue to eat soluble fiber, will there ever be a time when I think I can or CAN do this without prescription medication?

Wow, these may be Heather questions. I do appreciate any help you can give me. I look forward to hearing from you.
