Well THIS I can answer I do this stuff all the time for school.

Well it depends on how big your room is to decide how big you can make your scaling system so it fits best on the paper.

So here's the breakdown of ways I think it would work:

If you did it so 4 squares equaled a foot, then your room could only be like 10 feet wide by 16 feet long. And then each square would represent 3 inches in your room. Ex. something that is 6 inches would take 2 squares.

You could use it so that 3 squares equaled 1 foot. If that's how you did it then your room would have to be no bigger than 13x22. Then each square would represent 4 inches and something that is 6inches would be a square and half.

I think either of those would be your best bet because I don't think your room would be bigger than fit in those, but it could be and I'll help you figure it out if it is. Let me know! And good luck! It's really a lot easier than it sounds
