Did too many crunches? Feeling a little sore or crampy?
In the March 2005 issue of Body & Soul magazine, there's an interesting article about how to help relieve some abdominal discomfort with self-massage. Even though there are photographs to illustrate how to do the massage, I think the accompanying directions are quite clear.
"...According to the Japanese healing tradition, the entire abdominal area, known as the hara, is the body's energy center. Massaging the hara can provide relief from a variety of ills, from workday stress and tension to indigestion and menstrual cramps. After a long day, change into some loose, comfortable clothing and try this simple self-massage."
1. Place the palm of your hand near your navel. Make gentle circles around your navel in a clockwise motion.
2. Try pressing with your fingertips as you continue to circle.
3. If you find a sore spot, stop and hold the pressure for a moment and breathe deeply into your belly. To finish, hold your hand still over your navel for a few moments. take deep breaths, and let your shoulders relax.
