The jury is still out on this one, but it appears that my problem yesterday and the day before really WAS the muffins. I got up this morning and took my SFS with a glass of water, as usual. I waited an hour, and then had some rice cereal instead of a muffin... and lo and behold, almost 2 hours later, I'm still feelin' fine.
So now I'm left wondering WHY the muffins bothered me. After looking at the recipe, the only guess I'm coming up with - still - is the egg whites. I haven't eaten eggs for about 3 months now, and it's been at least a month since I've had anything else that's contained any amount of egg product. The lone exception I can think of is angel food cake... and although it didn't trigger an attack, I couldn't even finish the slice because I felt so sick eating it.
Is it even possible that such a small amount of something can trigger an attack? Or maybe I'm suddenly allergic? I'm completely baffled by this, mostly because I ate eggs for years with no problems, and egg whites are even IBS-safe.
Anyway, thanks again for all the well-wishes yesterday. I still felt pretty miserable by the time Adam got home from work, but by then we'd figured out that we had a SUPER view of the fireworks from the park across the street, because we live so close to the waterfront. So we sat on a blanket in the park and I got to see my fireworks without having to panic about being so far from home when I was unwell.
