Hi:

Wondering if anyone could share some of their recipes for making 'calorie dense' smoothies. I want to put about 10 pounds back on and finding that anything commercially made is usually not IBS friendly. I'm looking for something I could throw in a blender in the AM bring to my office which is behind my house and drink through out the day.

Thx,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Well, I'd like to give you those 10 pounds! Unfortunately, all I can do is turn you on to protein powder. You want a recipe for "calorie-dense" smoothies, eh? Maybe mine will do the trick for you. (They certainly put the weight on ME!)

GeniSoy makes a protein "shake" that contains 14g. soy protein per serving. (One serving is one scoop.) That's 130 calories, my friend. Now, if you double that scoop and toss into a blender with a banana, which is roughly 90 calories, and some frozen blueberries (oooh, BABY!) for another 70 calories, then add a cup of vanilla Silk soymilk for another 100 calories, you got yourself a whopping 520 calorie-dense breakfast!

That oughta do the trick.

Try this: web page. I know it has about baby stuff too, but it's for helping to gain weight.

I'm hearing you Bevrs. I may have to go with a rice protein as I have a thyroid condition but, everything else sounds great. Thanks for the response.

Hi:

My thyroid problem is an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto's hypothyroidism. It is thought that soy, especially in higher amounts can be bad for the thyroid, especially if the condition is do to Hashimoto's. A lot of holistic MD's will recommend staying away from soy. No bigee, I would just substitute with a rice protein powder.

I wish I could find rice yogurt and give up that soy as well. Good luck.

I'm a Hashi hypothyroid myself and wouldn't touch soy if my life depended on it. Not only did my alt. medicine M.D. (ACAM) say stay away from Soy but my reg. M.D. (AMA) one as well. Soy is a goitagenic...........in other words, it can create a goiter....want a big lump sticking out of the front of your throat?....(not pretty)........eat soy!!!

(For me, to late, I already have a goiter )

Steph....got to About.com and type in thyroid disease in their search frame.............you'll get a ton of info on soy and thyroid disease. I was trying to find a specific article for you last night but there was so many I didn't know which to recommend....

If one can do Whey I absolutely love (and have no problems with) the Trader Joe's brand of Whey Protein powder............and it has a ton of vitamins and minerals, and amino acids in it. It is the base of all my smoothies....the chocolate is my favorite...but then chocolate is my passion anyway...They only have 2 flavors, vanilla and chocolate. Wish they made a rice protein powder as well

As to beefing up the calories in smoothies, add a few nuts like almonds, and/or dates...both are high in calories. Don't add to many....nuts are high in fats and dates are a great deal insoluble fiber. Flax is another I like to add, but it too is high in calories and I don't need more weight. It's also 2/3 insoluble fiber. You know, if you like your smoothies real sweet, you can add just plain sugar, or brown sugar, or maple syrup..........sugar adds empty calories, but calories none the less.

Just some thoughts...

Kandee

My mom had one rmoved and still has her other and sometimes it looks protruded. I know by using my way of knowledge with wheat and soy and minimal use I can hopefully not inherit or prolong the fact that I may become thyroid. Hey on another note did you get some snowfall last night?
The mountains look beautiful today.
