Ok, ok. I surrender! I'm an official lover of small dogs! She's sooo cute! She likes to be held like a baby and have her neck scratched and tummy rubbed. She's not completely trained' sometimes she'l sit if asked, but she won't come or go or roll over. But at least she goes to bed nicely! Any tips on how to train her to sit and go? She likes cheese, btw

I'm not an expert but I have heard the cats and dogs are lactose intolerant! So you might want to watch the cheese.

If your dog likes regular dry dog food you can give him little pieces while you train him to do what you want. This way he won't be eating table food and getting too fat! What's his name did you tell us already?

Have fun,
Debby

Oooh, Debby makes a good point. We've never EVER given "people food" to our dogs. They have a very sensitive stomach, and believe it or not do much better on a bland diet of the same dog food, day in and day out. I read that this not only is good for their digestion, but it's really good for you -- when you have to pick up their leavings! It's firm -- solid -- easy to pick up and remove -- little diarrhea, if any at all. They also are easier to train not to beg at the table when they know that people food is off limits.

You can find little tiny doggy treats in the store for training purposes -- and they work!

Oh, you're gonna have SOOOO much fun!

What kind of dog did you get? Was it a holiday present? My hubby and I went to the pet store the other night just to look...SO CUTE! I fell in love with all the dogs right away! I'm so jealous Peaches! No doggie for me...too many allergies to dogs and no pets allowed in our apt! Mind if I live vicariously through you?

Enjoy your puppy!!!!!!

*hugs*

Yeah, Ruchie, I'm midly allergic as well, but I'm hoping maybe I'll grow mmune as time goes on? I get a small rash and the back of my throat itches if I'm around her for too long. Also-aboutt he lactose intolerance. My friend Tommy that goes to a local college, told me that all people with lactose intolerance are NORMAL! Our bodies haven't always been able to naturally digest dairy easily. Over the years, our bodies have naturally become equipped with the lactase enzyme when we're born. So anyone who is lactose intolerant is actually normal, and everyone else is just a freak of nature!

Hi Peaches, I think I read you said you had some allergies to your new puppy? I am severely allergic to cats and have found that taking Allegra has been a lifesaver and I can now visit my friends that have cats. What's nice is that there are no side affects and it doesn't make your head all fuzzy like a cold medicine would. Just wanted to pass this on since I have found it so helpful. Clariton is over the counter and works well too but kind of pricey. Hope you are having fun with your little dog!

Thank, Debby! I have tried Allegra before, but it didn't work well with me. The dog is alright. I just get a little weird around her. But if it gets worse I'll definitley start taking Claritin. Thanks!

Actually, as far as I know cheese is a terrific training food for dogs. If it's not off your plate, they don't know it's people food, and it's similar in fat and caloric content to training treats. Dogs don't have any problems with it. (Well, there's always a possible exception). I'm so excited for you!

As far as training to sit, put her (it is a her, right?) on her leash. Walk a bit with her on your left. When you want her to sit, say "sit" once firmly, if she doesn't pull straight up on the leash, this will force her into a sitting position. You can also scoop out her hind legs from under her if she's stubborn. When you're ready for her to move, hold out a treat in front of her, and pull it away as you say "OK" she should get up and follow the treat at which time you can praise her and give it to her.

Hope this helps.

Yep, I've actually been doing a similar sort of training with her. She's been doing pretty well, but she can be pretty mean sometimes! She tries to give you a friendly bite if she wants attention. We've been trying to think of a way to stop her from doing this, but I dunno lol. It's all really weird to me. I kind of don't like having her running around while I'm trying to do stuff, so I tend to leave in her cage a lot unless I'm going to watch TV or something. She doesn't mind as long as she gets food and water and potty time. Thanks, everyone!

It's not a good idea to leave her in her crate that much... it's not fair to her. Get a squirt bottle and give her a good squirt when she bites you or disobeys you. Or you can fill a tin can with pennies.
