I first started having troubles in grade four. i am now in grade 10. I just feel that because i was so young when i first discovered i had it that i still have such a LONg road ahead of me. It reely makes it hard for me to attend school and do well in it. Its starting ot reely get me down i wa sjust wondering if theres anybody else that got it at a young age? thanks!

Hey, sweetie pie!

Welcome to the board! The first attack I can definitely remember was when I was in 10th grade. I had such bad stomach pain my mom thought I might have appendicitis and rushed me to the emergency room!

But I'm sure I had symptoms before that. I remember frequently telling my mom that my stomach hurt and I didn't want to go to school all through grade school.

But don't let it get you down, sweetie. Just try some of the suggestions here one at a time, don't overwhelm yourself, and you'll be fine. We PROMISE!! Cause we've all been there, done that!!

Glad you're here! Keep coming back!

Weird Laura Sue, my first attack was the summer between nineth and tenth grade. I was eating pizza on a bench with some friends at Geek Camp and all of a sudden I just felt HORRIBLE. And that was just the beginning... of the rest of my life!

Vikki,

You did a very good job posting this. And congratulations for having found this fabulous website. You're gonna get a lot better because of it. Everyone here is very helpful, so feel free to ask ANYTHING (we've heard it all!).

I started having IBS symptoms with certain food as far back as 1968, but I didn't know I had IBS then. Over the years, other foods started bothering me too, giving me IBS-like symptoms, but, again, I didn't know it was IBS. It wasn't until around 1980-1985 that I realized I had a problem. Still, I wasn't diagnosed (with a colonoscopy) until 2 years ago.

I'll be 60 in November.

Again, Vikki, welcome to the boards! You SOOOO found the right place, darlin'!

hey there
I wish I would have had this board when I was your age!
I remember being a very small child, 6, maybe seven and getting what I used to call my 'morning stomach ache' on the way to school...that ibs pain in my left side. but I was officially diagnosed when I was just 15, and I am now 24. I never used to tell my mum about my stomach ache because I wanted to be brave.
I know it can be sad to be diagnosed with something, but the good news is ibs is totally manageable, and for some a blessing in disguise in many ways. Ibs has stopped me from eating the junk so many people eat today, I have become an excellent and accomodating cook, I have to exercise a lot to keep myself healthy...all these things that we do often hear about doing, but a lot of people lack discipline because they don't suffer if they don't do them, well, I suffer...so there's the blessing side.
Welcome!

I sooo feel for those of you who are so young and have this ailment. I was around 40 when I got it (perimenopause era). I've spent years feeling sorry for myself, why me, etc., you know the routine which I'm dealing with better now attitude wise since I've found this site .... but those of you who are so young I am so hoping you don't have to deal with this the rest of your lives. I really believe they are close to finding something that really helps us. I never imagined till coming here that there were so many of us with this problem. Mine started with a combination of start of menopause, abdominal surgeries and major work stress. Hang in there folkies cause we are all pulling for each other in times of pain and times of joy!

First of all welcome aboard!!

Mine started when I was around 18-19. I first noticed it when I was at working Dairy Queen, an ice cream shop. Hmm, can we quess why?

I am now 23 and have to say that it has been the worst the past year or so. Mainly due to stress I think.

Melissa - do you take BC? I've also been curious b/c my symptoms seemed to start around the time I started on BC to regulate my cycles. Just curious.

I've had these problems as long as I can remember -- as a little kid, I had stomach aches all the time and spent long periods of time in the bathroom.

It sucks to have IBS, so that's not lucky, but at least you know what you have and can address it!! I am 29 now and just found out fairly recently that what I have is not something unique to me and that there are ways of dealing with it. So hopefully by having to deal with it so young, you will figure out your triggers sooner and it won't seem like so much of a burden.
