Hi Everyone -

I've been perusing this site for 2 years now and am finally deciding to post. I've been experiencing moderate to severe bloating and gas after eating for about 3 years now. I struggled with constipation and diarrhea at previous points in my life (didn't realize symptoms may have been IBS related at the time) but those are currently not an issue - just the gas and bloating.

I never have any symptoms until after about noon. They sometimes come after lunch, sometimes after dinner. I have had tests to rule out lactose and fructose intolerance. I have cut out coffee, caffeine, artificial sugars, and high fat foods. I have tried FODMAPs with limited success. If I cut out all gluten/fructans, dairy, alcohol, and processed foods in addition to those listed above (and also meat since I am a vegetarian anyway), I am usually OK, however when I try to add things back in, I sometimes I am OK with them and sometimes I'm not (different reaction for same food), so I've had trouble determining what is really causing the problem. I also think that I don't necessarily get symptoms directly after I eat a trigger food, but probably a meal or two later (although I'm not sure if that's 100% true).

I've also tried fennel tea which helps slightly, but cannot calm down or prevent the bigger attacks. I've also tried peppermint capsules before eating which have not really worked and given me heartburn/reflux. I exercise quite frequently (about 4x per week) and generally have an active lifestyle. I have tried going to multiple doctors, but none have been helpful or even had any suggestions.

I haven't noticed many people describe their symptoms as primarily gas and bloating without the constipation/diahrrea. Is this common? Any thoughts on what foods might be my biggest triggers? I'm hoping to be able to add a few things in so that I'm able to have something more than rice and veggies and not feel awful, especially when I'm out with others.

Thanks, everyone!

It can take 12-48 hours before a trigger food produces symptoms.

If you have GERD peppermint caps can exacerbate GERD symptoms

Did you eliminate all FODMAP for 2-3 weeks and the slowly try introducing one FODMAP group at a time to see which ones you are having problems with?

Gas and bloating are common symptoms for IBS and C/D need not be present but it isn't as common as when they are present.

Your description could be my description! Exactly the same with me. Isn't it frustrating! I don't have any ideas really, I follow heathers regime and low fermenting foods, I have put weight on though which is a pain, but tummy is great on it, if I venture too far into veggies and fruit I bloat, as simple as that. I too have a Haitia hernia which gives me gerd, peppermint is a no no and fennel tea I find horrid. Try lemon ginger, also ginger chews for when you bloat and sugared ginger. Also if you don't eat often enough, for me,that causes pain and bloating. Every three hours! Good luck
